Possible Serial Numbers on Peerless Patent Model

Stan asked me to post pictures of my early Peerless cuffs with possible serial numbers.

The cuffs in question are examples of the early curved case models that I like to call the
"Patent Model". The mechanism matches the "1st Model" but the appearance is very distinct.

Here are the pictures of the two cuffs.




Each cuff has a number on the back side of the cuff under the key hole. The font and style of the numbers "94" and "130" match each other.




These two cuffs were acquired at different times from different sources. One came from Joe Tanner back in the pre-internet days. (Thanks Joe) The other from eBay a few years ago. I have also seen a third pair on ebay. As I remember that one had a matching number in the 300 range.

My two cuffs certainly look like they have common markngs.

So sixty four dollar question is:

"Are these numbers Peerless serial numbers or are they user serial numbers?"

The numbers seem to be the same font and size so it would be a long shot that 2 different owners had the same stamping sets.

Also, the numbers seem to be stamped in a proper line. Most individuals use single numbers to stap cuffs and not often in a straight line.

I had a pair stamped like this many moons ago. Same font stamping.

I have a feeling this may be a manufacturer stamping.

All Peerless serial number marks that I have seen are on the
key hole side of the handcuffs.
More probably a badge number marked by the PD armory who would
have ordered the handcuffs for their policemen. They also marked
badge numbers on call box keys etc. Certainly very possible that the
handcuffs came from the same area of the country at one time.

I also belive these numbers are factory stamped serial numbers.
My set has no numbers at all. Does anyone else have a similar set without numbers.

JOE i have a little later two dated pair (PAT.FEB.20,1912 NOV.23,1915) THIS IS ON THE DOUBLE PAWEL ON BOTH SIDE'S ON BACK with the trade mark logo,anyway the serial number is 1308 on both cuffs,below keyhole at bottom and the 1 & 3 are different shape (FONT), WERE YOUR 1 has a block type stright head at the top, mine is angled 45 degree's and looks like the one used here -1- , your 3 is also more block type stright lined and 45 degree at the top, like a seven , mine is rounder,two half circles like one half of an eight,and looks like -3-,so if your is factory thay changed the stamp some were between yours and my later verison,oh the 0 looks the same -0-

sorry JOE, frogot to mention in the above description the mine are the 2 link (later) version, with grove on swingthru, and the 1308 serial is on front (keyway enterance side).

LARS i have a later set with the grove,single link,with (PAT,FEB 20,1912) on both swingthru's on front (keyway enterance side) with MFGD. BY SMITH & WESSON on back on the doulbe pawel.

just thought of something,the difference in the font (SHAPE) i spoke about could be that yours was done by s&w, while mine was after peerless started doing their own ,cause the 1308's have the peerless trade mark, while the little older model has the MFDG.BY S&W. SORRY THIS DOESN'T HELP as to knowing if yours is factory marked serial # or not!

I have 2 pairs of the "Peerless original by Smith & Wesson" version 1.
neither pair has any extra numbers on them.

One pair of model 1 version 1. again, no serial numbers.

Looks like another Peerless / Smith & Wesson mystery to me.

A quality product for sure..

My S&W 1912 are also complete without numbers.
