187 PAIRS OF HANDCUFFS STOLEN

A report last week in the British press states that over the last 2 years, amongst other items British cops have “lost” 187 pairs of handcuffs. The report states that, of those 187 pairs, a few are known to have been lost “in the line of duty” – but suggests that the rest have been “nicked”.

Incidentally, cuffs proved to be more popular than batons, as only 109 of those were reported as “lost”!

Now I understand why used British cuffs are often offered at eBay with removed (scratched out) serial numbers!

An interesting thought Guenter, but I doubt whether all 187 pairs of those cuffs would have been anywhere near the number that are offered on E-bay!!

What in fact happens is that when Speedcuffs are handed back by officers - because they leave or because they're faulty - the redundant equipment is sold out through surplus supply stores - and in the case od Speedcuffs that's after the serial numbers have been ground off.

So beware - a set of Speedcuffs with no serial number could easily be a set that was returned to police stores as faulty. I very much doubt the claims made by some E-bay sellers that the cuffs are "reconditioned by Hiatt"!!

So ..... buyer beware!
