I have my doubts about these... Anyone know more about these and the type of lock. And I wonder where this guy got them along with the other stuff he is selling. I even wonder how long they were buried in the ground before they were dug up as in how many years to just age them that way...

While the locking mechanism is of an early design used by the Chinese and Romans alike, the side view of said reveals that it was constructed of rolled steel as opposed to forged iron.

They're intriguing. There is critical detail not shown, but they appear to be hand forged. I can't see the hinge detail to look at the welds.

The patina look like wrought iron, but I don't see the "wood grain" texture so typical of corroded wrought iron. That's not definitive.

The square corners make me suspicious. They are easy to get with modern strap iron, which is cut to size. It would be difficult and time consuming for a blacksmith to do, forging down from a lump of iron. I'd expect to see the bows and center bar with a more oval cross section. The square corners add nothing to the quality or the utility of the cuff.

The seller's other stuff appears genuine, but I'm not an expert and only had a cursory look.

I have a suspicion that there is a market developing in reproduction hand forged Medieval style restraints.

Having worked previously in a drop forge and also for a gear manufacturing
company, I do know that if you leave a carbon steel item in a furnace
at 1600 degrees or more for a long enough period of time, the heat will
cause the metal to scale and look pretty much like the item being auctioned.

I am becoming absolutely convinced there is a growing industry in fake hand forged primitive restraints. I'll bet lunch they're out of Pak or India.

I just bought a set on eBay that are hand forged, spring lock cuffs, but have enough marks of modern manufacturing that I'm convinced they're fake. I'll put them to the grinding wheel this weekend to see how they spark. Ya wanna bet a beer they're mild steel?

I'll contact the seller tomorrow, and see what he says, but don't expect to believe a word of it.

BTW, that earlier post from Dnmmos, or whoever, was mine. That'll teach me to post before my second cup of coffee.

My sentiments exactly. I was thinking that for the seller’s asking price, I could produce enough of these “execution manacles” to try an entire town on heresy charges.

Locks like these were highly valuable in medivial times.
Restraints used on peoples sentenced to death were not allowed to used
twice - due to superstition. Apart fom the fact that witch trials have been quite rare during M.A., and the fact that the Witches´ Hammer was from 1519, (1484 was the "apostolische Bulle Summis desiderantes affectibus" of Innocenz VIII...),they would have used bolted or hammer-locked restraints on witches.
So my advice, dear Sarge, remove the lock and use a wedge or a bolt...
