I would like your opinion on "Police marked" cuffs

I have a chance to get some old style Peerless cuffs and others made in the 30's and 40's. They are marked with "CPD" (Cincinnati Police ) or D7 for district 7 or patrol 4 for patrol wagon 4 , etc. How many collectors would pay a premium because of the markings, and who would'nt pay extra and who would pay less because they are marked ? I have a few marked cuffs in the collection, but generally I don't care if they have PD markings or not.

I don't mind it if a handcuff has extra stampings as long as they are not applied in a sloppy manner.
I have one pair of H&R Supers with Winnipeg related stampings, which I like, but I don't remember paying extra for them.
I regret passing up a bunch marked for an Saskatchewan police department as they might have made good 'trades' for police collectors.

The problem is knowing whether the markings are authentic or not. It's good to have cuffs with a good provenance and genuine markings can add considerable interest - but as we all know, it's only too easy for the markings to be added "unofficially".

Recently I purchased a pair of Hagge/Schutzmarke Deutsche Polizei handcuffs from a German policeman.The cuffs do have the marking of the provincial police of Baden-Würtemberg and also some servicenumbers. If I have the choice between buying a plain pair and a marked pair I always choose the one with markings, without any doubt. Others probably wouldn't, I guess. So far I didn't have to pay more for a marked pair.

For me, it depends on what is marked on it and how well it is marked. For most pieces, I would not pay extra for markings.....the exceptions would be places of interest or belonging to a person of interest.....but we all know that (legitimate) cuffs like that are few and far between.

Good question.

I like marked cuffs if the markings are clear and nicely done. This is particularly true for a common cuff.

You know I like Darbies and I am very interested in old Darbies with markings that identify the original user. Some of the old ones had names in a very elaborate script. These are very nice.

On the other hand a poor set of marking could detract a lot from a cuff. Poor marking would be ones that were done by hand in a crude way or just random marks that would mean nothing to the average person. "CPD" would be of more interest than "D7" simply because it has a bit more meaning.

If you wouldn't mind, I would be interested to see the "CPD" markings on your old peerless. I too have peerless with the "CPD" stamped (4 pat# model 2). If I recall from a recent post, we have some of the same old peerless cuffs.

I was not able to get the CPD marked cuffs. The person who has them wanted to trade for some badges, and he thinks his cuffs are worth a lot more than I think they are worth. The result is I still have my badges and he still has the cuffs. All were marked with different font styles. CPD could also be Cleveland, Chicago, etc...

I have been gone for about 10 days, so its nice to be back!

I paid a premium for my almost mint Towers HC that is marked "Salem Jail".

The stampings are very nice and professionally done.

I think my only other marked cuff is a Peerless HC with "Detroit Police"
