Can anybody tell me about this this set of handcuffs?
I was told by the seller that they were used in the canadian prison system when presenting prisoner in court, but were discarded fast because of safety issues if a prisoner went amok attatched to a officer.

Well, its not glued. Maybe I should have attached some pictures of the joint. It cant be taken apart.
Here goes:
I bought it from an canadian seller on eBay some years ago. Believe the sellers name was something like Apehead1, and had a small funny jumping man in the description.

#7And I got it from an American seller who was in fact a former gun shop owner and was clearing out this stock of old S&W cuffs after he closed his store.Hi all!Click to expand...

These originally came to me in a similiar box to the model 90's but the box was longer like what the old handguns would have been sold in.
I contacted S&W and was told that they did in fact make such a restraint on special request and not many were produced.
BTW, how many here know that S&W at one time also made a thumbcuff, also in very limited numbers?
Well, they did.

I do not have a pic of one as I never was lucky enough to own one.
But, in 1975, on a trip to the states with my parents I did see one in person for sale in a magic shop in Tennessee.
It had the S&W logo and Marcas Reg. stamping and was far more solidly made than similiar Asian restraints.
As well, my childhood friend Randy Audas of Toronto saw one in the collection of a magician in Toronto in the 1980's.
That makes 2.

Concerning these cuffs, now that Santini has deceitfully conveyed the idea that they are rare, you can be sure that more will appear, and that he will start selling them, but just one at a time.

I just got mail back from Roy Jinks, S&W Historian for the last half century. He says he has no knowledge that S&W ever produced a thumbcuff and can find no records of such a thing. He pretty much knows what's been going on at S&W for the last the last 145 years.
That said, I think Steve knows what he's talking about so there is a pretty interesting disonance on the info.
Is there any other info out there that I could send to Roy to give him some clues to chase? He would be glad to do it and it could be a real blockbuster for us and S&W collectors (me included on both)
Thanks,
Brad

Well, one would assume S&W knows their own history yet I did indeed see a thumbcuff that clearly had the S&W logo on it as well as the Marcas Registradas markings.
Also, I clearly remember that the thumbcuff was of a much better quality than similiar Asian cuffs and that the body or the restraint was thicker and the distance in between the thumbs was smaller meaning that the lock body was not as wide as on Japanese thumbcuffs (which BTW were the only other thumbcuffs I ever saw on the market at the time).
Further, the S&W thumbcuff I saw had 2 seperate keyholes with one to unlock each thumb loop and not the commonly seen figure 8 double keyhole often seen.
My buddy who also saw one in Toronto concurs with me that the one he saw also had the proper S&W markings.
His name is Randy Audas and he also knows the difference.
While he does not collect these days and no longer owns his once great collection he knows his cuffs and collected many from the time he was a young escape artist in his teens.
Of course I do not work for S&W and am not privy to their records or archives but based on the quality of the restraint and the markings it had on it I am convinced that what I saw was indeed a S&W thumbcuff.
Perhaps the S&W thumbcuff was made as an experiment of sorts with very limited numbers being produced.
As such it did not become a regular stock item and thusly did not make it into S&W catalogs or literature.
If the S&W historian can not find mention of it perhaps this is because he is consulting old catalogs in the S&W archives.
Hopefully one will eventually turn up and lay this mystery to rest.

#17Steve, what was the era that you saw them or that you believe they came from? Was this a 60's-70's item or is it old?Hi all!Click to expand...

Shouldn't make any difference, he's been around the factory for nearly 50 years and his job is to know and track whatever they made and when they made it, but perhaps there is a cubbyhole of info that didn't get checked.
Very interesting that they show up north and not in the US. I'm wondering if they might have been an "export only" item made on special order.
Anyway, let's keep poking around on it. Sounds like it's worth chasing.
