From what I hear, they, the SAM, are going to have some magic collectors and Houdini historian go into the bank today and appraise the collection. The collection has been contaminated with asbestos for years and now finally something is being done to get the ball rolling to re-claim the items.

Contaminated with asbestos?

Give me a break. Take them out, blow them off with an airline, and clean them as you would a firearm.

If you worked in a shipyard or a brake shop, asbestos is a big deal. You don't want to inhale the stuff. But I don't care if the cuffs are buried in Chrysolite, they won't pick up enough to be dangerous, and they can be easily cleaned. Someone is getting hysterical, or ripping someone off.

This is happening literally right now outside my office window (Hollywood, Ca.)--Monday morning.

There was a DWP underground fire approx 4 years ago - which spread an contaiminated thin layer of "oil-like substance" throughout the Museum's artifacts.

The team (names well-know in the magic-escape communitity) will be going in to appraise the items today - for possible future legal action.

Interesting but knowing what the oil like substance one is referring to is really oil or what depends on how one would clean it off. There are companies that specialize in cleaning up after fires and doing restorations. Service Pro comes to mind and if one lets there fingers do the walking in the yellow pages, bet you can find a lot more...

Yes - there are companies that specialize in doing the clean-up...but WHO should pay for the expense (the City of L.A. or the SAM Museum)?...that will be the center of the legal issues.

The COST of the HAZ-MAT clean-up; moving & storage of the items to a temporary location, and then moving the artifacts back to their location...will cost probably at least $50,000. The little SAM Museum certainly does not have those funds.

They need the magic collectors that have the "deep pockets" to come to the rescue (and yes, I'm sure that DC has been asked).

When the T.Eaton Company building went under the wreckers ball five years agothey hit a snag. The sixth and seventh floors were insulated with asbestos. It added weeks to the demolition schedule and no one was happy except the team hired to remove it. The number of chemicals in the operating of building systems can also add an extereme amount of toxicity to materials in that building, so when the bank had a fire who knows how many different building system materials poured onto the Russian cuff.
I think it is sad that this great material was not on the road or on display in a more public manner, the exclusivity of the magic fraternity can sometimes cause a loss of its history.
