Joe, I guess your eyes are better than mine....I don't see the cave in. However, I still think it is nice and would consider buying it if the price was right (I am looking for a Tower Bottom Key right now).

MIKE :: i am sure that your eyes are pretty good.... i am going to assume that you did what many of us have done - because you want one you just gave it a quick once over believing what the seller stated about it.... i am sure that some people who don't care for me will make lite of this, but NONE of us (not even me - YES, LOL - i am very close) to being prefect..... not to long ago, i bid on & won a TOWER BEAN cuff from a well known Houdini-magic collector from N.Y who has been dealing for many years..... guess what, the one bow that was shown out of the cuff body had the teeth almost completely ground off.... photo was shot at an angle that kinda hid that fact.... althou, if you really looked close you could kinda tell.....of course it was described as IN EXCELLANT condition etc etc with NO mention of the bow... after returning it to the seller, i had to fight like heck to even get PART of my money back... i do have a pretty nice TOWER BOTTOM key cuff for sale, but it is quite expensive..... joe

Atlanta*Casting, I have my doubts too about it, seems everything this seller has relates to Texas Rangers and in my book, anyone could have made a rubber stamp and done it from the locat arts and craft shop.

To me, having that stamped on the box without any provenance
to back it up just takes away from the value of the box.

One of the sideplates looks like it is a little convex. I don't think that's damage, so much as warping during machining.

To me, it's a pretty strong sign of fraud. It would be extremely rare for any government agency to keep the cardboard box a tool came in. They might stamp the cuffs, but why bother to stamp the box - to prevent someone stealing the empty box? It's a fraud. And he defaced a valuable box.

His feedback is pretty bad, but Toolhaus doesn't indicate any particular pattern. I'f avoid this one, anyway.

Not to defend the seller, but please bear in mind that the USMC stamped numerous boxes of Harvard leg irons not to mention also stamping the irons themselves with USMC.

DENNIS ::: your eyes are fine too... the CONVEX is what i was talking about... there fore they are not excellant condition as seller claims... not sure, but you can also see the revit pins which generally is not bid deal as many of them are that way.... but with the cave in it might suggest that the cuff has been opened for repair...... that in itself is ok IF the job was done very very nicely............... as per what SANTINI states, i have a few mint in box HARVARD cuff & leg irons marked ( stamped) with the BOXES stamped U S N..... difference is that we KNOW the HARVARDS were military issue.... we do not know TEXAS RANGERS .... i believe the marked box is bogus thou..... joe

Danvers was erected in 1878. He found these over 30 years ago,so lets say 1977 at the latest. Hmmmm... my math says 99 years at best, his says 110?

In 1977 Danvers was a working state hospital. The tunnels were used for utility maintenance and storage and access to them was restricted. What exactly was he doing in them and why would he assume he could take anything he found there home with him? (I was always told that's called STEALING.)

Humane restraints began making leather restraints for use primarily by state facilities like Danvers in 1876. It would seem more likely that an institution that was well known for progressive and humane patient treatment would be using them rather than towers products. Maybe these were used for the patients that kept chewing through the leathers?

And I e-mailed him and pointed out that I've personally bought towers bottom key handcuffs on e-bay. I even sent him the URL for a recent auction list from this forum showing a pair was sold in January of this year. His response was that he and 3 other collectors had researched it and there's never been a pair of towers bottom key cuffs sold on e-bay and I never bought any there. And don't bother to bid on them because he wouldn't sell them to me. Can't argue with logic like that I guess.

Those TR cuffs mentioned earlier - the seller is David W. Alford, who is one of the official badge makers for the Texas Rangers. Just FYI, of course that doesn't validate his story, just letting you know who the seller is.
