I recently recieved a picture of a Peerless solid key, single link cuff with an odd logo on one movable bow. Has anyone seen this before or can tell me what it is ? It is almost a "broad arrow" but is a lot different.

I have seen 2 differing versions of the Canadian Broad Arrow marked on cuffs I have found here in my country.

This sure looks like one of the variations.

Hello,

For anyone interested, this is the South African UDF (Union Defence Force) military mark, the broad arrow within an upright U.

Cheers,

Jack

Does anyone know if any Commonwealth country used a "T" over a broad arrow as their mark?

I have a Darby with such a mark.

The seller just emailed to tell me the mark is for the RCMP, but I agree that it is probobally military and not RCMP. Any thoughts ?

Many of the early cuffs I have seen in Canada which bore this mark, i.e. Marlins, Tower Bean, etc were once used by the military and then seem to have been handed down for use to the NWMP or as they are known today, the RCMP.

The mark is not a Mountie mark but is military.

Indeed these cuffs may have been passed down to the RCMP for use with the mark still intact as I have seen many, many times.

BTW, The Mounties never had thier own symbol or logo mark with which to stamp cuffs or pistols, etc.

I was going thru some old forum posts and came across a post from Stan Willis about cuffs with the Canadian Military marks. I am looking for handcuffs or leg irons with the C broad arrow mark , I would be willing to pay cash or trade for these items. Please email me and I would be more than willing to work something out. Thanks in advance.

The broad arrow mark is not a military mark, per se; rather it is a mark evidencing government owned property. Originally, any property purchased with Crown money was stamped with a crown logo. But, that was rather difficult to do, so the "broad arrow" came into use.

In American colonial times, due to a wood shortage in Europe, and particularly England, the old growth timber forests in the New World were one of the most valuable exports, used to build British naval vessels. Strange as it may strike many today, agents of the Crown would select trees suitable for shipbuilding, and mark the same with an axe; striking six times upon the tree trunk to chop out a "broad arrow" thereby marking it as Crown property.

Yes, in due time ALL military property was marked with a broad arrow, but it was not the only property so marked. ANY property belonging to the Crown, the British government, could bear such a mark. In due time, legislation of Parliament established the broad arrow as the exclusive mark for Crown property.

Certainly, that broad arrow appeared upon military items, but also other Crown owned property as well.

Possible Commonwealth countries that could have used T Broad arrow would be Tanzania since 1964, Tonga 1970, Trinidad and Tobago 1962 and Tuvalu 1978. Tonga and Tuvalu might be doubtful considering their size, but maybe the dates could help depending on the date of manufacture of the cuff.

I'd have to agree that the "broad arrow" or "crows foot" as it is sometimes called, is a government mark appearing here in Australia on Department of Defense (D arrow D), Public Works Department (PWD Arrow) etc. Mostly I see the Arrow stamped on metal tools from Government workshops to reduce theft.

M&C plus broad arrow markings have appeared since Mid 1800s until end of World War One or there abouts. I have one backstrap darby marked M&C Arrow 1860 and a couple from WW1. This mark was previously B arrow O which stands for Board of Ordinance. I was told by militaria collectors that M&C stands for Military and Civilian, but other more learned friends have said Ministry and Crown. Either way it seems a dual purpose mark. Since Commonwealth police forces are part of the government, I see no reason why their cuffs could not be marked with an arrow but I'd be happy to hear otherwise.

Were markings upon things so simple. Yet, they are not, due to interpretation.

For example:

All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.

All rectangles are parallelograms, but not all parallelograms are rectangles. And while all squares are indeed parallelograms, as well as rectangles, any parallelogram that is not a rectangle certainly is not a square.

All parallelograms are quadrilaterals, but not all quadrilaterals are parallelograms. So, any quadrilateral that is not a parallelogram can never be a rectangle, nor ever hope to be a square, although all squares are quadrilaterals due to the fact they are parallelograms by virtue of their rectangular configuration.

So, by analogy, there will be those who call a broad arrow mark a square, a rectangle, a parallelogram, or a quadrilateral.

And all are perhaps correct.

For me, it's a polygon.

In what quantity do you want to buy? Have you checked the Chinese vendors? I bet they'll sell there.
