#2They are Berliner cuffs and likely as not they were made for and used in the prisons of the former DDR.
The clevis would have been attatched to a leather transport belt and they were using cuffs like this in DDR prisons right up into the 1960's.
Yours look early in construction but not as early as many I have seen.
I would hazard a guess that your set was made around 1910 - 1920.

#4Hello,
The University of Washington Libraries has put a foreign patent search portal online at http://www.lib.washington.edu/engineeri ... orpat.html. A more comprehensive yet probably less useful listing is on the US Patent and Trademark Office page http://www.uspto.gov/web/menu/other.html. Unfortunately, most foreign patent databases, unlike the online US database, do not go back to the earliest patents. Still, these are good resources.
Steve, the DDR (East Germany or Deutsche Demokratische Republik for those who don't know) did not exist before 1949, a bit in advance of around 1910 - 1920. Joe, Patentschrift is German for the patent specification.
Cheers,
Jack

#5To be perfectly clear...
I SAID the cuffs were likely MADE between 1910 to 1920 and that the DDR USED such cuffs in prisons right up until the 1960's.
I am fully aware of when the DDR came into existance.
The patent for a "Berliner" style cuff in no way speaks directly to when particular pairs were made.
Only when the patent was filed and hence the cuffs began production.
I also clearly stated that there are Berliner cuffs I had seen that obviously pre dated the pictured set.
I made myself plain with no need for historical or other correction.

#6You mentioned the German term which you say means "patent specification".
No it does not.
It literally means "Patent writing" which also directly means patent papers or documents.

#7JACK :: thank you for the clarification.... come on now lets play nice... SANTINI - JACK was just letting others know about the DDR that might not know, but it is the pits, when you think you are being dis'd - ain't it... many of us know what you meant, but others may not..... i will have to say thou that i do not see where you state LIKELY were made as i see no word LIKELY in the sentence that you wrote --- would hazard a guess that your set was made around 1910 - 1920. --- i do see the word LIKELY in the following sentence --- They are Berliner cuffs and likely as not they were made for and used in the prisons of the former DDR.--- but that is a complete different context of use of your words.... also, i do not know how true it is, but i have been told that MANY of the GERMAN words & phases DO mean different things, therefore if true -- maybe both of you are correct.... so thank you both & be nice.... joe

#10Hello again,
The primary purpose of my first message was to inform interested persons that foreign patent databases may be accessed online, a fairly new feature.
Because of structural differences amongst languages, sometimes literal translations benefit from at least slight interpretation. My intent was to clarify, not to offend. What Joe said.
Cheers,
Jack
