Peerless lightweight...

Hi!

I just had a two days "mini exhibition" at a hotel. Due to that I had the opportunity to meet a fellow collector I haven't met before. He showed me at set of Peerless "lightweight" handcuffs made of steel. The only lightweight Peerless I know about is the aluminium ones from the 1950´. This set is much thinner than the ordinary Peerless 300 but it has the same patent # (1531451-1872857). The set is bought in the late 1970'.

Anybody who knows anything about the model?

Dear Lars,

Do not give more than limited credence to US patent numbers. Although I am unfamiliar with these -- and most -- handcuffs, I do know about patents. (What I do not know is why companies, as they often do, imprint expired patent numbers on items. There is no legal advantage to this practise.) That a particular set of handcuffs would be thicker or thinner than another, or made of aluminium or any other ordinary metal, is beyond the scope of a patent, and, in that sense, meaningless in terms of the patent claims the handcuffs incorporate. Indeed, in terms of dating restraints generally, it would have been helpful had patent numbers been eliminated from the articles when the patents expired. Although this does not answer your question, I hope it is helpful in future.

Hi Jack,

Many thanks for the information about patents. Unfortunately, my knowledge about patents is zero but I agree with you; why keep printing the patents on items after that they have expired.

Since I also have a set of the Peerless aluminium cuffs I noticed that the patent numbers are different. Still, I haven't seen this lightweight model before.

Those would be the 7 oz. model (as opposed to their standard 10 oz. model at the time). Your lightweights were commonly sold up through the 1970s (that's when I first obtained mine).

Hi Lars,
I also have a pair of these thinner, 7 oz. models, but with a subtle difference. The keyholes do not have the guide pins in them, and never did from the factory. I guess this might have saved a milli-ounce in weight. According to Peerless, the pair I have was made in 1973 and are serial number 40095. They are in perfect condition, as I hesitated to use them because I thought they might be worth something someday. I am not sure if this model is actually rare, but I have yet to run across another pair and I have been looking! I may also list a NIB pair of model 400's on Ebay shortly, I hate to get rid of a pair but priorities change! Hope everyone is well, and by the way, Joe, I take it you didn't like the reply to the gentleman wanting advise on how to pick poilce handcuffs? haha

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your posting. I don't know how rare these cuffs are but I don't have them in my collection. The set you have without guide pins should be pretty rare.
-Anybody having a duplicate to sell or for trade?

I have made some research by contacting Peerless. A very nice gentleman, Peter B.Gill, gave me the following information:

* The 7 oz cuff was made from 1962 to 1982. Approximately 38,100 cuffs were made.
(According to the number made it should not be too hard to find...)

* The Peerless 4,5 oz cuff (aluminium) was made from 1957 to 1961. Approximately
9,200 cuffs were made. (Which makes the cuff pretty rare...)
