Darby Hiatts, how to tell the age on them???

Hello folks,kind of new to this whith handcuffs (Collect old guns as main intresst), but now i have a couple of handcuffs in my collection. I have a quest about the Hiatt Darby cuffs, is it possible to figure out how old they are?, im understand that thoose have been manufactured for a lot of years.

Hi Patrik,

There is not a simple way to date darby cuffs and I would strongly recommend you buy a copy of Joe's book "A History of British Handcuffs"

Styles and minor variations did occur over time and key shapes also altered which can be an indication of age but only when you are certain that the key is original to the particular cuff.

If the cuffs have Made in England stamped on, then that mark did not appear before 1930ish so that's another guide to age, however not all post 1930 cuffs are stamped with Made in England. Quality of construction also can be a guide as well as the styles of makers markings.

Joe's book, reading previous posts on this forum and handling lots of pairs will provide you with the best chance of dating cuffs.
