Hiatt 1960 Mark 2 question

Hello,

does a Hiatt 1960 Mark 2 have a double lock function or is it just single locking?

I managed to obtain this model without a key. A Ralk SNB 54 key matches but I did not found a way to double lock the restraint by turning this key, only to open it.

All 1960's double lock, but I cant see a Ralk key opening a pair.
Are you sure thats what they are? Any pictures?

Bear in mind that "mark 2" models have their own unique solid-stem, bitted key...so a Ralk key does make sense.

Well done Gunther on getting a set of the above handcuffs, as far as I know there are only 4 sets now known:
The set in my collection see page 333 in Alex Nichols book
The set at Rippon Police Museum (these are in quite poor condition)
The set that Michael Busch has (ex.Martin De Clerck collection)
And now your set!
The key I have I believe to be original and they do NOT double lock, they appear to use the same internal mechanism as the standard 1960 pattern and the solid key simply pushes back the two locking pawls to release the bow. The mechanism does not allow for any double locking facility so they are quite a low security handcuff.
I feel it a real pity that this 4th set has turned up, can you tell us where it came from? Until you found your set I considered them rarer than the Guiteau Handcuffs that are now in my collection!!!

here is a picture of my Hiatt 1960 Mark II, together with the matching Ralk SNB 53* key (* I hit the wrong number key last time). Unfortunately the outer condition here is quite poor, too, because of some plating lost.

Well, it seems that this model is not very common. Luckily, cause I paid quite a lot $$$ for them. Chris, I'm sorry for getting this for purchasing the 4th known set... almost sorry . The funny thing is that it was quite easy to get this thing. Someone from USA, whom I did not know and I had never heard of before, wrote an e-mail to me with (bad) pictures of this restraint and ask me, what I would pay for it. I told him my price and he agreed.

well, that's very comprehensible considering that the Mark 2 model is so rare (what I did not know before).

BTW: it seems that there are even different versions. Mine is blind rivet, while Michael's has embossed rivets at the bow-hinges.

Based on the photo's above, without a doubt they don't double lock because that part of the lock is missing. Here is the inside of the standard one and you can see what is going on inside.

Ok, now that I'm home, and have the Nichols #1 book at hand (p. 48), I'll answer my own question:-) ---

Hiatt 1960 "Heavyweight Pattern": BARREL-stem key with a bit. Key-post inside each kehole. Keyholes are horizontal.

well, finally it seems that I purchased a very common model... just kidding!

It looks like your piece has embossed rivets at the bow-hinges like Michael's. Moreover if I look close at Michael's sharp picture it seems that his 1960 Mk 2 does not have markings. And yours?

I don't know why Hiatt didn't stick with the solid key for this cuff.

I bought a barrel key version some years back and wasn't impressed with
it at all.

It's in someone else's collection now..

Guenter's queries are answered by Atlanta's excellent enlargement of my cuffs. Thank you. I believe the key is original. Perhaps Chris could check with his? Well, according to Chris's list this pair is No 5, I suspect more will turn up.

Thanks to Atlanta for the enlargement of the pic. Now we can see that it's the same version like mine and also like Chris' (in Alex book). So only Michael's Mark 2 seems to be different.

Does anyone have an idea, when this model was made? It is of the short bow version, of which I think that it is older than the long bow, correct?
