eBay only allows PayPal now? Is this true?

Yes it is true, this will start in late October. It was in the general announcements for today.

Today, items paid with check or money order are 80% more likely to result in an item not received (INR) than those paid with credit card or PayPal. Also, buyers who pay with check or money order are 50% more likely to leave negative feedback than those who pay with electronic methods. So starting in late October, 2008, we are moving to 100% electronic payments - credit cards, ProPay, or PayPal.

Always use CC if possible vs withdrawing funds from a bank account.

Even with buyer protection, if you use the bank account you are at
the whim of 3bay to determine if you get a refund and we all know how
smart and fair they are..

The CC gives you the option of filing a "non receipt of merchandise" and make
a chargeback to the seller to get a refund.

The scary scenario to this is when a seller doesn't pack your item well, ships it
in an envelope and the item tears its way out in transit leaving you with an empty
package that the postal worker will scan as delivered..

This happened to me with a lock & keys.. Empty padded envelope with hole in bottom end.

I also don't mind sending a USPS money order.

I went to the announcement board and didn't see anything regarding this issue.

Look for a message dated August 20th at 7:04 AM. It is in there.
I had a similar experience with the post office. The cuff fell out of the envelope that came from Australia. The Post office would not process the paperwork because I could'nt tell thim if it fell out in the US or outside the US. Seems that different forms are required, and they are processed in different places. You are not allowed to use both forms. I never saw the cuff.

Ebay foisted this earlier in the year in Australia. It has had some negative reponses. Many high-powered sellers left Ebay entirely. Ebay just wants to get their fee from both ends.

The fly in the ointment is that in the USA is that a seller from the US must accept legal US tender. I'm sure that more will hit the fan in the next few days.

This is an interesting announcement. E-bay's response to "Due to the recent significant increase in Paypal's costs and fees, we are no longer able to accept Paypal as a form of payment."? E-bay's rules for accepting Paypal payments already preclude sellers from using the "free" Paypal services. Even the "free" service got a fairly hefty "transaction fee" from the recipient while only allowing them to receive transfers from existing Paypal balances.It will be interesting to see how this works out. Greed has been the downfall of many a profitable business before now.

Seller Central, over on eBay's discussion fora, is going ballistic with this news. Lots of unhappy sellers. Lots more folks say they are leaving. Whether that is true or not, is hard to tell. The place is a shouting shop, more than anything else.

There is a rumor that eBay plans to divest PayPal, and wants to run its numbers up before making an IPO. If that's true, they risk killing both eBay and PayPal. PayPal does not offer a merchant enough over a merchant account portal, to make it viable without a connection to eBay. This is getting more the case, as many DIY storefront providers offer their own merchant account engine.

If eBay does dump PayPal, expect to see its acceptable payments field open back up.

With regard to accepting cash (or checks, money orders, or chickens in barter) you can accept anything you like. You cannot solicit payment in unacceptable forms. In the case of cash, that's probably a sound policy. But if a buyer offers you cash for your Lillys, you can accept it. If someone insists on stuffing money into an envelope and sending it to me, I'd be a fool not to take it. I'll discourage it, just to protect my customer, but I'll cheerfully stuff it into my wallet.

Well if ebay doesn't watch it, the void or potential for a void in the market will surely get some opportunist individuals to start another form of ebay. Hopefully they don't make the same mistakes ebay has made over the years....

E-bay was never the only on-line auction site, just the most notorious. They lost the "firearms" business a while back with their policy changes for firearms parts and accessories.

Almost all of the others have advantages over using e-bay. No fixed auction ends for instance, auctions end at 3:00pm tomorrow or 7 minutes after the last bid (No sniping). No listing fees. Smaller transaction fees. Several of them are organized by country. ebid.us... ebid.uk....ebid.ca...
