Cumming Handcuff Workings

Well, I finally managed to acquire a Cumming handcuff & I have to say, it is now one of my favourite handcuffs in my collection.
It is not in the condition it was when it was made (obviously) & it has lost some of it’s plating, but I think it is a superb handcuff.
Unfortunately it didn’t come with a key, but when it arrived I gave it a good soak in a bath of WD40, made a key & it works perfectly.
I just wondered if anyone has any pictures of the workings, (Patent drawings or photos of the mechanism, etc).

All USPTO images are in .tiff format, so you'll probably need a plug in. Go to
http://www.uspto.gov/patft/help/images.htm#req
and you'll get an explanation.
When it's all said and done, you'll wind up being able to save the images and then convert them to .pdf format.

That being said, and easier way is to just look the patent up on Google
http://www.google.com/patents
and you can directly download it already in .pdf format.

To use the US Patent & Trademark Office database, you do need a plug-in, as Franklin stated. Presumably you already have this, or you would not have seen the images. If you don't, though, and for those who don't, go to http://www.alternitiff.com/, or follow the link from the USPTO site, and download their free browser plug-in.

I recently acquired a Carberry cuff, and have taken apart
a Cummings to repair it, and this Carberry. Other than the post in a Carberry, there is no difference between the Carberry and
a Cummings handcuff. So, here is a photo of whats inside a
Cummings handcuff, although this is the Carberry minus the
post I had to replace. I also replaced the spring and
repaired the pawl. The back end of the pawl fits into
a notch of a piece that rests down inside the body of the
cuff, and is part of the button. This button, when moved,
releases the back end of the pawl and locks the handcuff.
It's a very simple handcuff in design and working.

I found that filling in the last tooth or bow groove with weld or even epoxy or liquid weld can turn the Cummings into one Hell of a cool escape cuff.

Just close it to the last notch and it will open.

The filled area will trip the trigger and it will unlock.

If you use liquid weld it can be removed so it is not something that will wreck your cuffs.

Hi Mike,

Merely filling in one of the pawl holes flush with the surface on the arm of a Bean Giant will not cause the pawl to depress far enough to cause the arming button to hold it in the unlocked position.

If it did every single flat area on the bow arm in between locking holes would cause the cuff to open when it was ratcheted to a different locking position.

The only way to do this gimmick to a Bean Giant is to:

1) Plug one of the locking holes on the bow arm with something that sticks up higher than the surface of the bow itself, and,

2) You have to file a notch in the lock case where the bow enters to allow for this raised portion to pass through otherwise the bow will not shut into the lock case.
