"Wrist Protector" from UK - ideas?

Hi everyone,

I recently acquired this "wrist protector" with a set of Hiatt handcuffs from the UK. Has anyone seen this before?

According to the seller, it is to be used on the policeman's wrist when handcuffing to a prisoner as not to lose control (they seem to do that sometimes here in Europe).

Any ideas on the manufacturer, cost or origin? (I used it with a Hiatt Speedcuff for dimension).

I've seen wrist protectors on many occasions in press photos here in the UK, but never before seen a close-up pic of one - in fact I'd always assumed that it was just a simple strip of velcro, but this appears to be a well-made item using leather and velcro.

I've never seen the protector used in conjunction with a pair of Speedcuffs, though I suppose that's always a possibility, but I suggest unlikely. The usual configuration is for the prisoner to be cuffed with chain cuffs (usually Hiatt 2010's) then for the escorting oficer to be cuffed with chain cuffs to one of the prisoner's already-cuffed wrists - with the officer wearing the protector, which is not an integral part of the cuffs. On less frequent occasions, just one pair of chain cuffs is used, cuffing one wrist of the prisoner to one wrist of the excort, using the protector on the escort's wrist.

it looks like a bit of proffesional kit, rather than a BDSM item, i'm guessing it would be made by the PRICE WESTERN LEATHER company in england, (somerset i think), if so, it would have their PWL logo on it somewhere. they make a lot of police/security/armed forces belt kit, check out their website.

I have found this thread to be interesting from many different angles but I do have some questions and hoping someone may be able to answer it. I'm in the US and quite some time ago they discontinued cuffing oneself to the person they are escorting. I presume they did this because of the way they cuff prisoners these days and officer safety is what I can conclude. I have seen many pictures of UK officers using these wrist protectors escorting on there wrists leading the prisoner around the courthouse and to and from courthouse to detention facilities. My question here is why do they do this, the logic of this escapes me. I don't think it is difficult to lose someone in your custody but I could be wrong.

Here in the US, I recall that years ago they had what was referred to as a "Lazy Strap". This consisted of nothing more than a leather wrist strap with a clip on the end that attached to the chain of a prisoner's cuffs, much the same as a dog's leash only much shorter. This item was discontinued when departmental regulations required prisoners to be cuffed with their hands behind the back.

Does anyone else remember these?

Hi there. the item you have brought is a standard issue wrist gaurd in the court escorting service in the uk. you will find that they are used by prison officers and court officers. my partner is an officer and its the best type of gurd that he has ever used it fits on like a bracelet rather than restricting the rest of his hand by louping over his thumb. your luck to have found one i have been looking to buy him some spares for an age but cant find a supplier who sells this type.

as a responce to a comment above. the officers dont take them off they stay on the wrist as a part of the uniform so your little monalouge about having a prisoner wait while the officer puts it on is null and void as the wrist gaurd doesnt get removed untill shift end.

Hi All,

These leather wrist straps are used incounjunction with the
Hiatts replaced 2010 or 2003 cuffs, TCH Handcuffs, Not sure which model, It's ither the TCH 800 or TCH 820, The 820 being the superior chain model 17% larger than the 800 model.
Perhaps some one knows which ones are used for prisoner escorting ?
