Hope the shipping adjustment was to your liking. We had the weight of the key wrong in the store, but they are corrected now so shipping fees are lower. The system usually works well with handcuffs and heavier items, but keys are tricky for it.

Thank you Orchid. Very fast response to the e-mail. I have several pairs of the 1st series and these should fit those as well since I'm currently using 1 key for around 14 pairs with all 3 versions of this cuff. I'll verify that when the keys get here and let you know.

Thanks for the shipping adjustment "green stamp" (amateur radio term),I did not mention that here on the forum as I did not know the criteria, which you have since mentioned.

All of these keys are stamped N, which work in the M-94 cuffs marked A, which apparently is the "common" keying.

Are you sure these were made in the 70's?

They are kinda longer than my original keys, not complaining.

In any case, this is a good thing, as these longer keys may be filed down shorter and modified to fit any of the 14 useable codes (0000 & 1111 should be excluded)out of the possible 16 codes.

The M-94's are that not that difficult to pick, discover the proper keying, and make a key using these longer keys as a key blank.

Actually these came to me in the blind with no story at all. Stan also got some from us and made some of the same comments that you are making about the longer shaft on the key. No idea about the age but Stan thought they were made by Smith and Wesson. The N stamp makes me think they are factory and not copies.

I have heard what you are saying about the 94's not being hard to pick. We try and use the right wording when we talk about items we have for sale. Would you agree that the model 94 was an early attempt at making a handcuff that was more secure and harder to pick than handcuffs that were commonly available?

I will take a closer look at them, I think that not only are they longer but the "N" is stamped deeper and in a slightly different location.

If they are not factory they are very well made copies.

They were designed to use a different key than standard, they can be hard to pick, however they can be picked using a different technique - some tools are required.

One of the weaknesses of this system was that a key could be made with an empty .38/.357 shell case, which would be hard to find in a secure environment.

The real drawback was that a plastic ball point pen barrel could also be used to make a key for the M-94's.

Also they were "transport" cuffs and not really "street" cuffs, as the key had to be used to double lock them.

I made this mistake on the street just once, the perp did not realize that I had un-locked the cuffs on them until I had already relocked them and had them double locked.

The 94's were developed if memory serves me back in the late 60's and some of the manufacturing processes they developed for those cuffs went on to be incorporated into the 100 series. Overall, it is not a bad cuff, just the engineers didn't calculate how clever people can be. The fact that certain common items that are available in jails and prisons was not accounted for in the design is what hurt the design. The engineers were looking for something robust and compact in a lock design. Even the newer higher level locks with the wards inside the lock case are not as robust as these wards can be damaged by the wrong key inserted and turned. Now with new designs like the lock pin inside a pin is used, the lock would be much more difficult to pick open. And would make available more than the dozen or so codes that could be used. Now what I have not understood is all the 94's I have seen have the letter A stamped on the bow, but I hear it is keycode N that opens the lock.

Yes the common cuff was marked A and used the N key, do not know why S&W did this.

I have heard that the Secret Service used the D cuff.

With 4 pins having 2 positions each there are 16 different possible combinations (2 to the 4th power), 0000 & 1111 were not used leaving 14 useable combinations.

Somewhere I have other cuff letters and codings, M seems to come to mind as one of them.

I heard that some departments (agencies) ordered them using their own letter and code, remember there were only a total of 14 available.

Just got 4 of the A (N) keys from erestraint and glad to have them. Shipping was prompt.

Orchid, I was charged $19 to ship four keys to me. Seems a little brutal for something that should have been about $3.00. Maybe you could check your billing program and see if it could do a bit better.

Dorson: Yes, they were introduced in the late 1960's....1969 to be exact.

I have duplicates of these restricted models: D, G, R...which I will trade for any one of these models: L, E, S, M.

We don't offer parcel post or UPS ground We like Priority Mail even though it costs more than ground services, certainly more than $3.00. Quick service anywhere in the world and no extra charge for pickups.

By the way you were charged $17 not $19 and this is a shipping and handling charge. We do ask a bit more than just the postage that shows up on the package but the actual fee is dispalyed based on the weight of the package and the method seleced just prior to entering credit card information.

I got 10 of these keys from e-restraints. Very prompt and fast shipping.
Comparing them to the originals that came with the cuffs that I bought new they are exactly the same except for:

1)The turned down portion of the shaft has the dimensions reversed. The original key had appx 65% turned down to the smaller diameter. The replacement keys have appx 35% turned down. The hole in the end is still the same depth as the original keys.

2) The "N" is stamped deeper into the key than the originals and is appx 15° to the right of top dead center on the ring. The originals were stamped TDC. 2 of the 10 keys used a larger letter and slightly different font than the originals.

Everything else is the same about them. Same size ring, same construction, same material and plating, same silohouette at the end of the shaft and the transition between the shaft diameters, and same overall length. Everything I can see seems to indicate that they were made by whoever made the originals. (S&W?) Possibly after the regular production ended? Possibly as a heavier duty replacement key? Anyone have better info?

They also worked very well in all 14 pairs of "N" cuffs that I have including variations 1, 2 & 3.
