This weekend I met with a fellow collector that I have known for many years and sold/traded many items with in the past - several trades I have regretted for many years but we are in the process of coming to a deal. Meanwhile he bought a few interesting items to show me including a Hiatt 1980 pattern hybrid cuff. The one that was in the Hiatt collection and that is shown in Alex's book was just a single cuff that had no mechanism to it. This one is in good working order and is double locked via the key way. The key will only fit in the vertical hole when the cuffs are single locked, it is the turned 1/3rd turn clockwise and taken out of the angled keyhole. It is made of aluminium and marked HIATT 1980 MADE IN ENGLAND. It is attached to an early Hiatt 'Snap-on' cuff marked simply HIATT.

The other interesting item is yet another variation of the 1960 pattern. It takes a barrel key, is single locking only but does have quite close tolerances. It is marked HIATTS 1960 on one cuff and BRITISH MADE PAT. PEND. on the other cuff. On the back both cuffs are neatly stamped P C THOMPSON 1258. Has any else see either of these models or know of any others??

I would also be interested to know whether the Patent Office actually keep copies of Patent Applications and whether these are available for inspection? It may be the original Patent Pend. was this barrel model rather than the usual one??

Cool cuffs. I really like the 1980 cuff. Very nice indeed. And how many versions of the bitted 1960 cuff exist? Crazy stuff.

Hi Chris, thanks for sharing those pics with us and I look forward to seeing these 2 fascinating cuffs next time we get together.

I cant really figure out why those 1980s were put together in that way sure, it clearly identifies the different keyholes of the 2 designs but surely when test-marketing these it would have been better to have a linked pair of the hybrid design as my immediate reaction when I saw it was that they could well be too complicated for use in the field with that design that requires the key to be inserted in different ways depending on whether the cuffs are double or single locked. Also, it would have been preferable to have had 2 of them linked as a pair to enable them to be tested by the police forces to whom they were being offered under normal working conditions.

Incidentally Chris, you havent told us how the hybrid cuff double-locks is it through the keyhole or is it the push-pin principle?

As for those 1960s they are beauties!! Never seen a pair before, a terrific addition to any (and very few!) collections. And again, the double-locking procedure? Is it through they keyway as with conventional 1960's?

Hi to all,

when talking about Hiatt and their prototypes an dother rare models, I am very interested in what happened with the documents and other things which Hiatt had at their premises in Birmingham. They surely had an archive and I am sure they possibly had some old cuffs and more prototypes and so on.

Has anybody an idea if this stuff was transported to USA too, or it was simly sorted out and damaged then?? Has any of the UK-resident collectors visited Hiatts when they were moving away?

As you say Mike there are many questions that will probably remain unanswered. Ref the 1960 cuffs marked Pat.Pend. they do not double lock but unlike the Mark 2 cuffs that Joe and Stan have just bought from Ebay which can easily be opened the above pair have a very tight key way and this coupled with the two locking pawls means they are quite secure (however the tolerances on the bows is not very tight and they can be shimmed open quite easily).
Ref thge 1980 hybrid, the double keyway model is double locked by inserting the key and turning 1/3rd turn then removing it. You will see in one of the photos the 'bar' that comes across the lower keyway to prevent the key from entering the key way when only single locked. The other cuff on the right is a standard type that double locks with the end of the key at the bottom of the lockcase.
Hope that answers your questions - it will all make more sense when we meet up and hopefully they will still be on loan or will be part of my collection.

In answer to Josef's query, I know that Hiatt had a very good collection of restraint samples and documents, but most of the items "disappeared" at around the time that the LaTrobe family ceased to have an interest in the company. So sadly a lot of the Hiatt "history" has been lost. Whether that loss is permanent or temporary remains to be seen.

That's a good idea Dorson, but as with so many good ideas - it's easier said than done!

I don't know much about the new owners, but what I can say is that the Hiatt factory is located just a few miles down the road from me here in Birmingham. They were always paranoid about security/secrecy and in more recent years that was heightened because of all that nonsense from the civil liberties people about the company producing legirons. On the couple of occasions that I went to the premises I never managed to get past the reception area.

As for the people who worked there - find them now, if you can! I do recall that some years ago one of the local newspapers, I think it was the 'Birmingham Post', ran a feature on the company and some of its history (before all its "bad" publicity). It was at a time before they were producing Speedcuffs and probably around the time they started producing the 1960 models. The feature included a brief interview with the company's (then) oldest employee, but he was only a "metal basher" who operated one of the machines turning out the 104's and other darby-styles. As far as I'm aware, the company never had many employees and if it was possible to trace any of them now, I doubt they'd be able to tell us anything we don't already know - unless we could find somebody who was employed on the design/marketing side!

Final try. Joe if this doen't work feel free to delete these attempts to post

Hi,

As Mike has mentioned the missing Hiatt collection i'll now recount my only knowleadge of the subject.
Ive mentioned this in private to one or two people in the past who visit the forum.

In 2006 I purchased a pair of handcuffs via ebay from a seller who had several pairs of handcuffs listed. "His account is still active". The seller stated that he was selling them on behalf of a friend.

The following week the same seller listed a pair of Hiatt Bean cuffs. I watched the auction for 5 days then suddenly the listing disappeared. I assumed someone had persuaded the seller to sell direct. Slightly annoyed at missing the chance to bid I contacted the seller using the link from my previous purchase to see why the listing had gone. I did this because around this time a number of cuffs seemed to disappear from various ebay sites. Two Lyon Prestos from ebay.fr and Horst Moabit's and a Berliner from ebay.dl The seller told me he had removed the listing because he had lost the key during the time the auction was running but that he would relist them when he found it. He mentioned that he had a large collection of cuffs to sell on behalf of his friend and was planning to space out the sales over the coming weeks. The seller offered to forward my mobile phone number on to his friend who owned the handcuff collection.

A few days later I received a call from the actual owner of the collection who midway through our conversation happened to mention that he "owned" the Hiatt collection. He claimed to be an ex police officer who either lived or worked overseas I now can't remember which. He was well spoken and sounded very confident in himself. He mentioned that he was back in the UK for only a couple of weeks before returning overseas. He was selling off everything except the Hiatt collection which he had placed into storage. He had a large number of Chubb Escort cuffs which he was prepared to sell all with letters of authenticity linking each cuff to a famous criminal. I had suspicions about the validity of these claims of authenticity and he was asking premium prices for them.

He certainly new a considerable amount about UK and US handcuffs quoting model numbers etc without hesitation. He also mentioned things about Hiatt which I should imagine very few people new.
For example he was confident that Hiatt had made two distinct production runs of its Sheffield Pattern cuffs. The first in the early 1900's and then again in the late 1950's and that the key style differed slightly between the two. He claimed to have examples of as well as variation of every restraint Hiatt had every produced.

Our conversation ended abruptly after I asked him about how he had obtained possession if not legal ownership of the Hiatt collection. My question obviously troubled him and I have regretted my lack of diplomacy ever since.

I still have his Christian name and the mobile number which he used to call me. I have never heard from him since and apart from the initial pair of cuffs purchased from his friends ebay auction I have never bought anything from him.

I do believe that this person does have all or part of a collection which was owned by Hiatts. I think the Hiatt Bean cuffs may well have been privately purchased away from ebay as I doubt the lost key story. They certainly have never been listed since.
Personally I would like to see this collection gifted or acquired by a museum in the UK and not be spilt up. I'm sure these cuffs will surface in the fullness of time and I hope they don't disappear underground again. He was certainly aware or the interest in and value of the items he possessed.

I too have spoken with this person when I purchased a few pairs of cuffs from him. He told me the same as Mark has mentioned. I have not spoken with him for a while, as he lives abroad, but do have his details. I will not give them out as I don't think that is correct, but next time I speak with him, I will try to find out more about the Hiatt Collection.

Hi @all,

I'm, still wondering about this "new" company: TCH (UK) Limited

Their products seem to be (except for the labelling) the same as the formerly British made Hiatts range.
And their first deliveries are out now....(perhaps Martin could tell more )

Has anybody more informations about this company? Perhaps a kind of management buy-out of the old facility?

Yours
Roman

Here are pictures of the TCH cuff like the hiatt Speedcuff. Norhandel also shows other standard TCH cuffs and they seem to be the same as Hiatt. Norhandel even states that they are made by people with great knowledge of Hiatt. I will have a few of the Speedcuff style for sale in the US shortly.
