Cleaning of old handcuffs

I just received an old pair of Mattatuck handcuffs which needed some good cleaning. I managed to remove most of the rust with my Dremel-tool but they still show a lot of dark spots and don't look clean at all.
When I compare the pieces of my collection to the pictures on other collector's sites (including this one), it seems to me that I must be doing something completely wrong on my cleaning job. Can you guys please give me some tips?

Hi Peter, I would suggest getting a bench mounted grinder and replacing at least one grinding wheel (abrasive wheel) with a wire brush. steel not brass. The high speed of this home/industrial tool will remove the rust and leave you cuff in a satin metal finish.

When using the above machine, don't press the surface of the cuffs into the wire as if more pressure will make it work better. Hold the cuffs very firmly and allow the wire wheel to do it's work.

Care must be given that the edges or chain is not grabbed by the wire wheel as this can rip the cuffs out of your hands and fly them across the room, or draw you hands and fingers into the spinning wheel.

Also always wear safety glasses as both bits of rust and loose wire can be thrown off the wheel.

Use you dremel for small jobs, cleaning cuffs isn't a small job.
