Personally, I start this year with a new and nice model. I think it is a rare german Horst Stein. But there is a problem one side is jammed. Impossible to open it. I do not want to be stupid enough to break the mechanism by forcing on the key. Atame sent me a copy of the original key some days ago. Thanks again my friend

Hello everybode,

I just e-mailed my thought to Eric but maybe we can discuss them also here.

To unlock this model you just need to turn the key ONE TIME 45 degrees clockwise and BOTH sides open together. So maybe one bow is just frozen a little bit and a good amount of Ballistol or WD-40 on the cuff could help. Soak it over night and then turn the key 45 degrees clockwise, hold it in this position and shake and pull the bow.

But I also thought of another possibility: there are two separate bolts on the sides of the lockcase, which were pulled back after the key is turned. Often those old cuffs are not made totally identically and even an original key does not work on another pair. It might be that the key bit or one side of the double bit of the key, which I made for Eric and which works on my HORST is about lets say half of a mm to short for Eric's piece. So recommended Eric to go to a locksmith and let him make another key like the one I sent but with a longer bit. Then he should take a file and slowly shorten the bit until it hopefully works on both sides. I am not sure if this will bring success but it is worth a try, I think.

PS: here you can see a picture of this cuff from my site. Both bows have TWO places where they can be inserted into the cuff (don't ask me why). You decide by turning a square plate if you want to use the lower or the upper hole. So there are actually four bolts which where simultaneously pulled back after turning he key one time 45 degrees clockwise.

the feature you describe is used to make the cuff suitable for different wrist sizes by making the cuff`s internal circumference larger or smaller.

Hi,

it is strange that one side opens while the other not... My Stein han only singe bitted key, both sides opens at mone moment.

Try to use a stronger wire bent to right angle and press the pawls which protrude to the holes where the bows enters the lock. One side is opened, so if you press the pawls, there is the chance that the second side will open too...

My specimen has pawls slightly longer on one side than on the other side, so possibly the key is to short to unlock the other side and a new key with longer flag will help...

To loosen the lock up, you need a penetrating oil, WD-40 is for keeping moisture out, not lubrication. Lately I have been using some stuff called PB Blaster to free up rusted and sticking parts and have had good success. On new locks I have been trying a product made by them that is dry lube which has PTFE in it.

1ST -- clean the inside of the keyway with NAVY JELLY rust remover.... get some into way the bow locks in...... let work for 2 or 3 minutes... during that time work the key back & fourth MANY times ADDING some more JELLY.... push - pull - yank on the bow backwards - forwards & side to side too.... now wash out with HOT water ... bang the cuffs on a board at your wash sink & wash them our SEVERAL times to get ALL the JELLY out..... try opening them a few times while doing this... once open ( IF they do ) wash inside out again with HOT water - banging the cuffs etc etc.... WORKS WONDERS !!! joe

FORGET -- WD-40 -- as it does not do much....... UNTIL -- after you clean them out with the NAVY JELLY.... then WD them several times to get out ALL the moisture.... joe

Another solution is put liquid wrench, which loosens rust, and is very
penetrating into the open side, and the side with bow closed. Or, better
yet, soak the whole top of cuff in liquid wrench for an hour. Then work key
back and forth. MOve bow, like Joe said, back and forth, side to side, and
then while key turned wiggle and pull bow. My guess is it'll open.
Once open, treat then with naval jelly or put some more liquid wrench into where
the bolts enter inside lock body. If Naval jelly is used, rinse it out.
Good luck. This has worked for me, and Ian, many times. I've opened cuffs
nearly totally rusted shut with liquid wrench. John

Eric, come to the police convention in Anderlecht with Pierre in March and bring the cuff along. I'll bring my spare keys and I'm sure there will be one with a longer bit somewhere in there.

I had a pair of Tower beans pattern cuffs that I almost sent back to
the seller because one side would not open. I tried a different key
which had a slightly longer bit and both sides opened up just fine ...

Have a lok at the cuffs - they are in very good condition, they have an easy life behind them. The locks are not rusty - I really guess the key has a short bit...

Try to press the pawl in the hole on ode side and I am sure you will unlock the second side...

I have tried to press the pawl in the hole without any success
I have tried other keys without any success too
I have bought WD-40 without any success

I confirm there is no rust and the cuffs seems to be in perfect condition
When I turn a key in the hole The left side opens easily and the right side move a little but it is impossible to open it. Without the key the right side does not move

Yesterday I requested a locksmith near my home to help me. He told me that he could not make a new key. He is not a specialist for this kind of job. For your information he was very surprised by my request and this object.

Thanks Peter it will be with pleasure to come and see you in Anderlecht but for professional reasons I could probably not be there.

So due to this situation I am ready to send the cuffs to a specialist

I think your problem is the key

you say if I put key in the bow moves A little

and without key not otherwise there is A broken part of An old key

inside the lock

try to knock with A little piece of wood carefull on the lock case

and turn the cuff some times over to see if there something come out

of your cuff

if you don't want to do this yourself then you can sent it to me and I

will look for you

it is no guarantee I can fix it but will try it for you
