Authenticity of Indian Flexible Darbys

Hello all.

I have a pair of Indian Flexible Darbys. I am wondering if anyone knows if they are authentic or reproductions. This is a link to a picture: http://www.bulletleather.com/indian_darby.html The cuffs have a number 82 stamped on one of them and also a number 82 stamped on the key. What is the value of them if they are authentic and if they are reproductions?

Hi Craig,

You have an authentic pair of Indian flexible darby handcuffs. However they are a reproduction of a pair of Hiatt flexible darby handcuffs. They have no significant monetary value approximately US$ 20.00.

These cuffs are still turned out today and will be tomorrow and are often claimed to be antique slave trade era items which they are not. This is where you may be getting confused between authentic and reproduction. Basically they are a genuine Indian reproduction of a British handcuff.

I concur. These are the ones you find on eBay. They're worth about twenty bucks, retail.
