Bean Flat Keys

Hello,
I now have three pairs of Bean handcuffs/leg irons that have the removable lock mechanism and open with flat keys.

I have two keys and while each open some of the locks, nether opens all of the locks. So I was wondering if this is a common issue with flat Bean keys or is it an issue with replacement keys? (One is a replacement key. The other I am not sure.)

In one case the key ridges are too high and the other the key seems too fat. Of course filing the relevant areas seems to cure the problem, until I acquire another set...

I've handled many Bean Cobb cuffs over the years. My experience is that one original key will open most of them.

Steve Santini informed me that the Lovell made Bean Cobbs have a fluted keyway, while the H&R Arms made Bean Cobbs do not. Perhaps you own Cobbs made by both companies. We may also be able to identify them from detailed photos.

Here are some photos:







They all appear to have a fluted keyway.

The handcuffs both have the PAT. MAY 2 1899.

The leg irons do not. they do have numbers inside the bows. 8 on one side and 18 on the other.

Sorry, no spare keys. I have been picking up sets that do not come with their own keys so I have a shortage myself.

The keyways on the old style Cobb vs the H&R Cobb. The H&R Cobbs are straight and not fluted.

Hi, I make keys to Cobb cuffs. I usually mill the grooves in the keys to suit the fluted model but if anyone requires none milled keys, let me know.
