Three Way Darby Combo

Mark (RMP) recently asked if anyone had seen a factory original three way Darby combo.

I am not sure if the cuff shown below fits the bill, but it is one of the more unusual cuffs in my collection.

The three cuffs are each marked Hiatt Best and Hard. They are very similar and show equal wear. Everything looks factory made.

Now comes the odd part. The cuffs are of considerably different sizes. The smallest is 2 5/16" (59mm), the second 2 1/2" (64 mm) and the largest is 2 5/8" (67 mm).

So what was it used for?

Perhaps itt was attached to a post or some other fixed place and one cuff was used to restrain the prisoner. The three sizes were there to simply get around the one size does not fit all problem.

Great cuffs Joe!

I have to agree with you that the 3 sizes are to get around the varied wrist size problem.

3 different sized prisoners cuffed together during transport or court appearances or 2 different wrist sizes cuffed to an escort.

This sure is factory made and is rather rare.

Hi Joe, That really is an interesting piece!

Just curious but... I know you stated that the cuffs all have equal wear, Do they have much wear on the center ring? (indicating real world usage)

I do not see any signs of extra heavy wear on the central ring, but then I rarely see that kind of rare on any Darby. What I meant to say was the general surface condition of the three cuffs is identical. The pitting and patina is identical indicating that the three cuffs have been together for at least most of their existance.

Thanks for posting the picture of your 3 way combo. Very nice indeed.

Do you mind if I ask did it originate from the UK or in USA ? I only ask as 3 way combos seem to have seen more use in the USA and this may have been made by Hiatts for the US market.

I doubt I'll see another but I'll keep my eyes peeled.

The truth is: I don't actually remember. This was an eBay purchase from a coupld of years ago. I think the dealer was in the UK, but I am not sure.
