#1I'm in charge of creating a public education display using all the old police and fire gear collected over the years at this agency. I have been looking through the boxes of antiques and was hoping this group could help me identify some of these items (actually, I'm also hoping to get the approximate age of each). I will attach a photo of each item and list a short description below.
1) Hand mancles, no markings at all. They cover the entire hand and are connected with a chain. The palm opens (via hinge) to allow the hand to be entered, then the palm locks in place and a chain/ratchet secure them around the suspect's wrists. Any idea who manufactured these and when they were made?
2) Silver Pratt's combination handcuffs. The pat is dated: Nov 7, 16. The serial is #1359. The bar in the middle is solid and one side is attached to the bar. The other side will swivel from side to side. They also have some more information stamped into them, but I think that was added by the user. It reads, "A.J. Morgenthal *259. O.P.D." Any idea on dates of manufacture?
3) Silver "The Peerless Handcuff Co. Springfield, Mass." Serial #19235. This is written on both cuffs. The pat shows "Feb 20, 1912, Oct 19, 1915, Nov 23, 1915. The back side of one cuff also shows a registered trademark (looks like a three-sided throwing star." Any dates?
4) Black colored handcuffs. Both cuffs have "Harvard Lock Company, New York" printed on one side. They are connected with an unusual chain and they key hole is slanted. No other markings. Any dates?
5) Silver colored chain handcuffs and both round bars move. The ratchet bar goes inside the opposite bar when they are closed. There are only four teeth on the ratchet bar. On the face next to the key hole it reads, "Pat. May 2, 1899." On the inside of the cuffs there is a serial # 39176." (I think..it's hard to see). The key hole looks like it takes a flat key. Any information on manufacturer or date?
I have several more police tools that aren't handcuffs, if anyone here can offer information, I'd be happy to send photos, etc. directly to them.
