What is up with the little drilled dimples?
Do these appear on any other cuffs of this model?

hi

on most of the old german cuffs are dimples

they like to do that when they sell them

don't know why

but it has no effect on the working of the cuffs

They're surplus marks. Many agencies deface surplus materials when they sell them. It prevents someone from buying an item surplus and turning it in instead of the one they were issued. Turning in salvage in place of issued equipment is an old supply room scam.

Hi,

these drill holes are for the snap-hook of the key or key ring.

With very small "holes" in the aluminum body. On my set, which is unmarked and cruder war era set, they are obviously casting imperfections.

Hi,

I agree with Rainer: the drilled holes in the bow are intended to snap in the hook with the key - I have one that came with exactly the hook you can see on the photo above, hooked into the hole. Of course the hook has to be removed before using the cuff, but as these cuffs are usually not used on your duty belt in germany, but for transports, court hearings and so on that's not a problem.

I'd guess the small hole in the body has a similar function, but it indeed also could just be a mark. On the other hand, for a mark it wouldn't have to go completely through... I haven't seen this variation so far.

Greetings,
Martin

Sorry guys, but I disagree with you on the 'holes story'. This is not done by the manufacturer (Hagge) and is not standard procedure at all. I have seen lots of Schutzmarke Deutsche Polizei handcuffs without these ugly holes in them. I compare this with the situation in England, where some idiots do remove serialnumbers out of surplus Hiatts Speedcuffs in a very rough way.

Logical or just plain smart to hook the key for a handcuff onto that very handcuff.

This makes no sense and could cost a person their life.

I also do not agree that this is what the drilled holes are for.

Hello again,

I didnΒ΄t state that the holes were drilled in by manufactures, as I didnΒ΄t state that the keys were left snapped on the cuffs while arresting subjects...

In fact it was use in some authorities to snap the keys to these cuffs when they were stored. And some authorities, e.g. Prisons or Offices of Public Prosecutors, let these holes drill in to have the right keys together with the cuffs (they have their own workshops). Espesially the prison cuffs didnΒ΄t have a standard key system and respectively the prison ones had other keys than the police ones. The rigid Hagge or Schwarz was not a cuff carried with officers personally (as they did (still do?) in the Netherlands...). In some "BundeslΓ€ndern" they carry one in the glove locker of the police car, additionally to those, the officers carry personally (mostly Clemen & Jung).

I hope this info will help.

Best wishes
Rainer

Hello Rainer,

I think I understand now. The police departement that ownes the handcuffs drills a hole into the bows, just to store them together with the keys, right? That explains something.

But what is the thought behind keeping Deutsche Polizei and Clejuso handcuffs in service in the same police unit? One of the reasons to equip all Dutch policemen with one standard model of handcuffs was to solve the classic 'key problem'. All kinds of handcuffs were in use in Holland before 1978; Hiatts models 1960 and 1970, Peerless, old Lips, etc. They all had their own keys...

By the way; the 'Bavarian' Clejuso was developped for the same reason, more or less; they fit the old Clejuso keys.

Regards,

Dirk

Hello Dirk,

Germany is a federation. So there are similarities but also differences. Each country (Bundesland) has own police regulations (not all, but some) e.g. different uniforms, some countries have more similar or even the same than others, others are quite different. Nowadays is a tendency for more standardisation. Directly after WW II there were great differences due to the "Besatzungszonen" - it isnΒ΄t a coincidence that "K.& D." handcuffs are looking like "Massenottes", as the police units supplied with these cuffs were in the French zone, e.g. in the country of "Baden". Furthermore were pre WW II handcuffs in use for quite a long time, especially in other authorities than regular police.

Best wishes

Hello Rainer,

I totally do agree on this one and am familiar with the history on the K&D and the Baden-WΓΌrttemberg "Polizei" handcuffs.

It seems logical that, for example, the citypolice of Hamburg has other uniforms and equiptment, compared to the Bavarian 'Landespolizei'.

But the use of two different types of handcuffs within one policeunit (a Clejuso hanging on the service belt and a Deutsche Polizei laying in the squadcar)? I don't get it....

Best wishes,

Dirk

Hi everyone,

in fact here in Nordrheinwestfalen, the "Bundesland" I live in, there are the following handcuffs currently in use within the same police force:

- oval shaped Clejuso cuffs from the 1960s
- Clejuso No. 11
- Alcyon cuffs from the 1970s (those where the keys are made of folded metal)
- Alcyon cuffs with fat lockcases (red rubber on the key grips), with chain or "cardan" connection.
- hinged Clejuso cuffs

You will not see many if any "Deutsche Polizei" cuffs as these were put out of service in the late 1970s. The hinge connection was considered "inhumane" by some high rank police official. Years later they did however not have any problems with the hinged Clejuso cuff.

Best,

Michael

Hi Michael,

Never heard the qualification "inhumane" for Deutsche Polizei/Lips handcuffs before
Not even in my country...

The chanche of leaving marks on the wrists of the suspect using DP is much less than most other handcuffs because of their thin bows, like Clejuso, Alcyon, Hiatss, S&W etc.
If the hinged version was the real problem...they make them also chainlinked LOL

Best wishes,

Dirk
