I find it interesting how the cuffs are applied in an overlapping position. I have often wondered about Irish 8's as well as I have never seen a picture of them in use in the period they were actually used.

In the old days, cuffs were applied in front, not behind the back like today. Putting them on with your arms parallel, palms together, in front would be more than uncomfortable.

I saw the auction for this catalog when first posted and it didn't have a buy it now

or I would have grabbed it.

I notice that on this particular page it lists the Bean Giant as a #3.

Were they size numbered like some of the Hiatt handcuffs?

Hi,

No. They did not come in different sizes.
The 3 refers to the Model Number.
However, there are some size variations between examples and this is attributed to difference in the dies used by the various contract manufacturers and at different times of the cuffs development.

Hi, years ago Ray McKee sent me a copy of an advertisement for a Bean chain cuff, I don't know if E D Bean designed it but I have never seen one or this advert appear anywhere else. Does this catalogue contain such an item?

Bean shows a chain connector to connect 2 prisoners together, but they don't shwo a chain handcuff in any of the catalogs I have. Pictures are from my CD.

Hi Stan, the advert for the Bean chain cuff had a rectangular lock (operated by key) the chain was a closed loop and two lock fitted between the chain, making two loops at either end.

I will did up the picture and get it posted here.

Here is the picture Ian is talking about. It is from an 1896 catalog. I've never seen one or heard of one in a collection. I don't remember seeing a patent for this cuff. Does anyone have the patent or a cuff ?

What a neat handcuff this would be us collectors. It reminded me of the 1913 Woods chain cuffs. Maybe Woods got his idea from this Bean chain cuff.

I have a Bean catalog as part or a 130+ page book that Bean produced Jan 1887 called "Hints for Police Officers and Sheriffs". It has the same items in the catalog referenced in this thread plus several other items including the Bean Gun Cane and other restraints used in hospitals.

If Bean filed for a patent, for these chain cuffs, there must be a record of it. The hunt starts in the morning.

Ron, I have a friend who was just talking to me about a "gun cane" and I was wondering if you can scan a picture of the one in your Bean catalog and post it here??? He collects rare, antique guns and has heard about them but has never seen one before.....I wanted to send him the image. Thanks.

Hi All,

I have been out of town and just catching up on all the posts. I will try to get a scan of the Bean Gun Cane soon.

Stan, the hunt for a patent or application on the chain cuffs was not successful. I wonder if Bean actually filed for one. My thought is he sold or it was just used by Woods for his cuffs with the 1913 patent date.

Ron,

I just picked up the 1887 Bean book. Does yours have a brown embossed cover? I have the cane gun on page 32 also. It's a pretty wild book. It shows cuffs, ankle shackles etc. What freaked me out was the section how apolice officer should kill a horse, dog and even a cow! although the part with opium supposotories is right up there. Sort of speak.

Hi Kevin---Yes my book is what I would call a browish red with black printing on the face. The information in this book is quite amazing. It really covers most subjects a law officer might encounter in those days.

I think these books were given out by Bean to promote his cuffs. My book is signed "Compliments of Edwin Boice". Doing some research, Boice was a Private in Company P of the Forty-Ninth Massachusetts Volunteers during the Civil War. I think he went to work for Bean or a distributor of Bean's products. They were all in the same area of the country.
