Hi, I was directed by a lock/handcuff collector here. I have a pair of Jay Pee modern-looking handcuffs that was given to me as a gift a couple of years ago & I was looking to sell them. I've been trying unsuccessfully to find out more about them to see what kind of price I should be asking for them, but Google isn't helpful at all. I can find a lot of information about Peerless, S&W, etc. but nothing about Jay-Pee. Can anyone advise me?

You can see a picture of the auction here (I started the auction yesterday before I was directed here):

Thanks in advance for any help!

I can't tell for sure from the picture, but it looks like your cuffs might have been pryed apart and then peened back in place. Either that or it was some real shotty workmanship from the factory.

Years ago, Jay-Pee cuffs were made in Spain but I think the later ones were made in Taiwan. The earlier Spanish made ones are worth about $30.00 in good condition with a key, but the Taiwan version would probably be worth less. I think you did the right thing to start your auction out at about $10.00 and your shipping price is great....no big handling fees! =)

I wouldn't expect to get a lot out of these cuffs, but I think they will sell. Good luck with your auction.

Thanks very much for the posted and private responses, guys! Glad to know I'm about on target

- I hope they're not pried apart! They don't seem it. They have two links between the cuffs, but I just arranged them the way you see so people could get a sense of the cuffs while also being able to see the manufacturer's engraving for the most part (my camera is quite outdated).

- I also hope they're not from Taiwan. I mean, besides the engraving referring to Spain, they do seem to be quite 'real' to me... Not like the cheap aluminum ones I used to find in Chinatown along with cheap repro nun-chunks and the like when I was a kid

- Lastly: Yeah, I don't like to charge handling fees I figured I'd send them in the same gift box with maybe some more padding, wrap the whole thing in some bubble wrap and just toss it in a flat rate $4.95 Priority Mail envelope. That way I feel reasonably secure about it being sent in good condition and the buyer receives it in less time that parcel post or 1st class.

Ooo, and I see just now that I already have a bid. Good start to the morning

Anyway, thanks again!

The rivets do appear to have been mashed, and the lower edge looks like it had been bent and reflattened. They do appear to be the Spanish cuffs, though.

Unless the box is unusually thick, I ship a pair of cuffs, in the box, in the smallest priority mail box, the one that folds and assembles with tabs. (I'm away from my shipping table, and can't recall the number.) Wrapping with one sheet of bubble wrap pads it and keeps it from rattling around in the box. That will save you a couple of cents over a flat rate envelope, IIRC.

If you do use the envelops, be sure to tape the keys down well, as the envelopes often come to me with battle damage.

Oh right! Like the boxes large enough for a VHS tape. That might be a good idea. Thanks for the tip!

I just added more pictures to the listing, and I see now what you mean about the rivets being mashed. Ah well, there's nothing I can do for that. I just hope other people don't mind as much.

Again, thanks for your help!

The riveting job was done at the factory, but what happened is that the cuffs never made it to the grinder station. What they do is rivet it together and then take it to a grinder to grind it flat to the face of the cuff. Then it goes to the plating department, and then to the lock assembly to have the internal mechanism put in. Someone was having an off day and probably should never have left the factory if they had a QC person checking closely.

Ahhh Oh well. So maybe not the best in terms of collectibility, but it certainly seems like a serviceable pair of cuffs.

Now I'm just curious where my friend got these cuffs from, then. Too bad we don't speak anymore.

Was jay pee's spanish manufacturer of Alcyon handcuffs?

They seem strikingly similar to me..
The rivetting is the same, the rivet pattern is also the same or a close look alike, as the shape of the sideplates (for example the little round depression on top of the sideplate, where the pivot is, and the small "bump" on the plate corresponding to the hollow made for the pivot's foot)

I own numerous alcyon cuffs, from those they call universal joint, the ones with a rigid connecting bar, etc, and all of them have rivets that look this way, as if they did polishing before rivetting, then directly to plating.

It seems factory standard, these, most probably werent torn open then repaired...

Apart from this untidy aspect, they (mine Alcyon's) seem in no way shoddy, but sturdy at least, ard really correct on the mechanical part, none of the 7 variants I own from this patern had a problem (their newer line, with a key bit slot, à la smith & wesson, on the contrary are a wee bit smaller, lighter, and flimsy...

(But I really love their nice semi-rigid/folding ones that cant be folded over the keyholes!)

(and as to quality, I had trouble with one Clejuso 19R, whose ratchet had a big, really big burr that stuck the ratchet in the depressed position when keyed open,
it was a PITA to unstuck the ratchet, i had to modify a key to do so consistently, before I decided to file down the burr...
Speaking of quality control, this is far worse than a primitive but well rounded exterior, no?)

regards to all!
