I think it would be helpful if we can agree on his name first. "Elijah Rickard" has been shown here before in one of Joe's posts and has been documented in other books. I don't believe his name was Elias or Richards from my research. Rickard is a name from Cornwall England as far as I know, and I have family connections to that name. The history is just as important as the "lumps of metal" to me. Hope this helps. Paul

Elijah Rickard might very well be the proper name to use for these irons. Joe Lauher has already pointed
out the history in a posting from 2007, thread below.

The history is interesting but I'm also very interested in the "lumps of metal" as you prefer to call them.

Some collectors may not want to have the information about their possessions in public which I, of course, respect.
All the handcuffs on my list is either on web sites (like Stan's and mine) or shown for the public in other ways.

Please send me a private email if you want to provide me with additional information about the ER cuffs/leg irons known,
I promise the information about owner/serial number will not be official.

Hi Lars,
of course I use "lumps of metal" as a joke and I wish I had an ER cuff I'm very jealous but they're out of my price range.
The closest thing I have is an ER railroad padlock which has a key numbered 3426. I guess they made a lot more locks than handcuffs! It's also marked B&O RR Co. (Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road).

Hi Paul,

Would you mind posting a picture or two of your ER railroad padlock? Is it left or right hand threaded?
I have become very interested in the ER history; the cuffs are nicely made and I really like the handcrafted feeling to them.
So far, not very much interest in participating in the quest, unfortunately.

Hi Lars, thanks for you thread, it would be nice to know how many of these cuffs are out there, as well as other rare cuffs. Being known to have one and the number on my cuff being known will help if the cuff is ever lost or stolen.

According to Bob Dix, who is recognized as a leading US researcher of American Padlocks, the spelling is Elijah Rickard, and he lived from 1795 to 1879. There is an interesting article on 3 generations of Rickards and their padlocks in the latest edition of the "Journal of Lock Collecting" of the ALCA.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your support! It still seem like the number of eight known handcuffs is the correct and two of them are right hand threaded.
Serial numbers are not correlating to threading. I first thought that low serial numbers denote right hand threads but that's wrong.
I have no information about ER leg irons but my estimate is about three known.

@ Stan; Interesting information! From now on I will refer to them as "Elijah Rickard" which obviously is the proper name.

pretty sure i own a pair of E R leg irons based on construction of lock and key i also own a padlock very distinct craftmanship please tell me what you know about these and what they might be worth i'll try to get someone to send pictures these are very heavy built

HI Lars,
I know a guy who has an ER handcuff, ER leg iron, ER Neck Collar (thats right - neck collar),
and a beautiful ER padlock, all with original keys. I'll be visiting him in June, and will take photos for you. Of course, the Sacremento museum also has an ER handcuff and Leg Iron.
I know of several others, but they are ones you probably know about.

Hi John,

What an awesome finding and selection of E.R.! You really are a great talent in sniffing out rare stuff!

I only know of totally 8 E.R handcuffs (one of them in the Auburn collection), two pair of
leg irons (one of them in the Auburn collection). -A neck collar! It must be one of a kind!

I'm really looking forward to se lots of pictures. Please, also remember to check whether they are right
or left hand threaded as this is an interesting and sifgnificant difference.
