field and son cuffs on ebay uk

i have just been looking at some field and son cuffs on ebay uk. they seem to have some extra links in the chain, just wondered if anyone knew why. the item is 180423275304. thanks - pete

Hi Pete,

These cuffs appear to be Field & Son's version of the Hiatt Superintendant model.

The cuffs are quite thin, as seen in the photos, and the chain links and swivel are much smaller than standard so they would be lighter in weight and less bulky for the police officer to carry around.

If Field & Son went out of business in 1883, these cuffs would predate the Hiatt version by about 20 years, so perhaps Hiatt got the idea from Field & Son.

The 1883 year for the death of Field and Son is now known to be wrong.
Three years ago we found that Field had an advertisement in the 1901 Police Constabulary Almana.
So it looks like the company survived the 19th century.
