Stotz handcuffs

Hi folks,

I just received a pair of cuffs I bought through eBay which look like Stotz cuffs to me but unlike the few Stotz cuffs I came across before, they don't have any markings at all. When I saw pictures of other Stotz cuffs on this (and other) site(s), it seemed to me that the thinner part of the barrel-lock is just a bit longer on all those other cuffs. On mine it's only about 7 mm (0.2756 inches, I checked the conversion table just to make sure) long. My set came without a key but I got a Stotz key from Cannon's (so it's probably one made by Ian) and it works just fine with a little pulling.

Now I'm just wondering if I have an original Stotz or a copy (which could even be more rare than the original). Can anyone out there help me out with this? I tempt to believe that after a lot of searching, I finally have an original Stotz at a nice price but I'dd like to be assured.

I tried to upload some pics of the set but as I'm not really good with computers that didn't work out so I'll have to send them to Joe. Joe, could you please post my pictures in this thread?

Hi Peter,

I don't know for sure, but I just spent some time holding my pair of Stotz up to your pictures and yours look really good, even down to the funny little "step" you find on the inside of some of the notches. The only difference I could readily detect was on the shoulder that is one-third the way down the lock case from the key hole, yours looks to be about twice the depth of mine. That is something that could easily have been manufacturing variations over the years.

I got mine from Mike Busch about five or six years ago, so I know they are good. He's quite knowledgeable about these and you might email him to take a look at your pictures here.

nice to hear from you again! From the pictures you have posted I am quite sure that your set of Stotz cuffs is an original one. As far as I remember from the about 10 pairs of Stotz handcuffs I ever came across only two or three pairs were stamped whereas the other sets were not.

The locktubes on Stotz handcuffs may vary in length, whereas the locking bolts seem to be of the same length on all cuffs. This has the consequence that on some cuffs the end of the threaded part of the bolt is very close to the surface of the tube (so that it almost can be gripped with pliers), whereas on those cuffs that have long tubes the end of the bolt is deeper down in the tube.

Over the time I have come across at least three different Stotz keys, the difference between them being the length of the threaded part of the key that goes into the locktube. I think I must have a picture somewhere that shows it; when I find it I will post it here.

Hi. I have a couple of pictures that should be coming up in a while that shows the variations in tube length on the 2 Stotz cuffs that I have. The keys also show the corresponding difference in length.
The interesting thing about one of the cuffs is that the example in the second photo has an internal thread and a flat top on the tube. At one time this cuff had a screw-on cap with 2 spanner type holes in it just like a plug 8 plug. The original key shows the 2 prongs. Michael was right about the screw length being the same dimension on both the short and long tube models. The upper end of the screw comes up even to the top on the shorter tube. When the caps (if I had them) are screwed on all the way, the ratchet screw would be pressing up against the caps and would prevent the bow from tightening. In essence, it would deadlock the cuffs. (Michael, I have been promising you a photo of this for years)
The only other difference between the cuffs is that the long tube model has "A. Stotz" stamped into the tube. m
