Field and Sons handcuffs

My husband was once issued with a pair of Field and Sons handcuffs when he was in the Nottingham City Police. He still has them and we were wondering what sort of value they might have.

They have 'London' stamped on them also on one side.

You do have a pair of Field & Sons handcuffs.

They appear to be plated and have their original key as both the key and cuffs have the No.10 stamped on. The 233 forms part of the address you may be able to define the word Holborn in front of the London stamp.

Field & Sons date back to 1794 and seem to have survived until the very early 20th century.
They were based at 233 High Holborn until 1877 when they moved premises to 59 Lehman Street.


It would seem that Field & Sons later to become Parker, Field and Sons did not actually manufacture handcuffs and the current thinking is that Hiatts of Birmingham actually made handcuffs on behalf of Field & Sons.

I'll give a very rough price range based on eBay sales but between £40.00 and £100.00 and hope for middle to top end as a guide. The amount of plating remaining would certainly be a factor.

Hi Gilly,
dare I ask how long ago your husband was issued with the cuffs. I'm assuming that they were not new when issued. The key looks rather old but the cuff design had not changed a lot for 150 years. The plating has a dull appearance and color (not like chrome) and underneath is dark also. I'd prefer to see the words stamped 1mm or 2/32 of an inch high and be nice and sharp. But that's my preference. Very Nice.

Unless I am wrong, the picture she is using is from this site as an example. It would be nice to see an actual picture of the cuffs Gilly is talking about.
