#6It seems there's very little that's new in the world of handcuffs - ASP have been packaging in this way since they marketed their first pair of cuffs. S&W have even incorporated the small slot at the top of the package that will enable the unit to be hung on a display stand - just like ASP.I just got a new shipment of pink S&W 100s in. Don't get me wrong everybody, S&W produce some great hardware - but it really is time they got into the 21st century with their marketing. On a recent visit to Georgia it was apparent to me that cop stores in the Greater Atlanta area were saturated with ASP cuffs which, in most cases, were prominently exhibited on rather smart display stands - very different from the piles of blue boxes of S&W gear that are usually pushed away at the bottom of a glass counter - or not even visible at all .....!
But long live S&W!

#7The new packaging is all about maximizing profit. We are now talking cents per pack rather than dollars with a mass produced product. I bet the savings are not passed on to the consumer! #10Speaking of the 21st century, it's strange the most common manufacturers have not come up with a new key concept. You can pick up handcuff keys at your local 7/11 now ... . #11Yes, Yuil have had their non-universal key for several years but recently ASP brought out their "Security" range of chain, hinged and (VERY recently!) rigid cuffs. The "security" key will also open standard ASPs, but the standard key won't open the "Security" range.
Cuffs in the ASP "Security" range are identified by a blue slider for the double lock. Paradoxically, once the cuffs are double-locked it's not possible to see the colour of the slider!!

Pick double lock off with bent wire and shim cuff as usual.
Big deal.
Same story with the new Clejuso cuffs.
If people want to make things more interesting why don't they get off their butts and make cuffs that have multiple double lock slider bars.
I mean, this would not be the ultimate answer but if would of course mean if you tried to pick off the double lock you would need to get one slider, then the second, and so on.

I think the US police community prefers the standard key, because it eases the logistics of handling prisoners. Particularly with the multitude of overlapping jurisdictions, between local, county and state, you could easily have cops from all three involved. A single key makes it easier.
The prisoners are supposed (famous last words) to be searched, so they shouldn't have keys or tools on them. They're also supposed (more famous last words) to be under observation.
If they capture Steve, they're in trouble,anyway.

I'm sure the new packaging is designed to open new points-of-sale for S&W, why leave that to the competitors?
Of course S&Ws would rather be sold next to donuts than to cookies...
From the picture it looks as the new S&W packaging is even worse for us collectors than the ASP one, which at least can be opened and closed again without much damage. The S&W one lookes like those really cheap plastic attached to cardbord style packagings?
But this "open view" retail boxes seem to be a new trend. ASP started it but also the "new" SAFARILANDs are packaged that way... At least those can easily be opened and closed again, but they tend to break... The box, not the handcuffs

ever since this thread was started I wanted to remark the RAM handcuffs.
Unfortunately my own example is deeply in archives, buried between dozens of other exhibits. But however, by chance I found today a picture of the packing on my HDD:
I do not known the year of production, I bought them some years ago as NOS. The original introduction to the market may have been at nearly the same time as the ASP, leaving the question who really invented this kind of handcuff-presentation.

#21Those RAM cuffs are identical to the company that makes HWC cuffs. Whoever makes HWC obviously just stamps different company names on them. It's amazing how long HWC has been around. #22About this particular type of packaging is that once you remove the cuffs you can take a pair of scissors and cut the package into a pile of shims that will open your handcuffs!I just got a new shipment of pink S&W 100s in. They came carded, not boxed.
