Hello everybody

I would like to thank Ian for his kind help and I want you to know that this guy is fantastic.

Some months ago I requested help about my Horst Stein from Germany. It was impossible to open a side of this very rare handcuffs. Everybody gave me various solutions but unfortunately without any good result.

So I sent a mail to Ian some weeks ago and he answered me a kind mail.

Today the cuffs are working perfectly well thanks to his know-how. For your information you will find below some photos about his work

Congratulations & well done for letting us all enjoy your good fortune & congratulations to Ian for another great job.

It is always good to hear & see details of how a cuff has been repaired or restored & of great interest to see how we have different ways to restore them.

I'm glad we have a place where we can all share this info (amongst serious collectors).

The drawing above is my representation of the inner workings of the handcuff.

The main body of the handcuff is a solid cast steel block. (cast iron?)
Fitted to the outside of each side is a heavy flat steel spring, which I guess the pawls are riveted to at the far end ( but couldn't see)

A formed sheet metal housing covers the springs on both side and up and over the top. The covering has the keyhole and holding in place the cam which moves the pawls in and out and covers the springs.

The problem with the cuff is that the housing had be ever so slight crushed on one side , right opposite the pawls. ( location marked with X in the drawing) Even with the key, the pawls could not be pushed back far enough to unlock and was therefore permanently lock.
