This is not a factory made item but instead was something cobbled together by hand and used during WW2.

It may have been inspired by German or French designs but I do not think it was made in either country.

In fact, it could have been put together in any part of War torn Europe but judging by the workmanship I am inclined to think one of the slavic countries.

Hi Steve, and happy New Year!

Just how old is that French or German design?
If you're correct about this, then they would be foreign copies rather than prototypes.

Upon close inspection, they appear to have steel rivets, steel chain and a steel clevis.
The lack of markings might also lend credence to your WWII hypothesis.
