CHP Academy Handcuff Collection

Last month I finally got to see the handcuff collection at the California Highway Patrol Academy in Sacramento, California. They have a very nice large room with all sorts of CHP badges, equipment, cars and of course cuffs.

The officer who was helping me was very courteous and and even tried to get the display case opened so I could get better pictures. However she was not able to do this so all pictures where taken through the glass window. Yes, there are many mislabeled items and many visitors have told them so. They hope to enlarge the display in the future since they do have several boxes in storage of donated items. Maybe sometime in the future if this gets done they might ask for help from this Forum in correctly identifying the collection.

Just think within a few feet of each other there is a complete McKenzie Mitt, Oregon Boot, Bean Collar, Elias Richards cuffs and leg irons (mismarked as Russian).

Thanks so much for posting these great photos. Others, Michael Busch included, have had photos of this collection on the forum.
Now, some interesting news;

My research has found that the huge Auborn collection was divided between George Hill, Jim Main, and this collection. Part of the
Auborn collection once resided on display at a hardware store on Hollywood Blvd. In that part of the collection there was a Kruger
handcuff and Lorey Combination Handcuff. My Lorey research also points to the Lorey Jim Main had did not come from the Auborn collection.
Also, I've been told that whats on display at this museum is NOT all of the restraints that they have. So, could this museum also
have a Lorey and the only known Kruger?? Anyone have a connection to find out if there is more in storage? I'd love to know.

to all :: should anyone wish to try to get more info please go right ahead, but you will be beating a dead horse.... i tried & got NOWHERE & i am sure there have been others before me.... the curator etc would NOT even try to contact any relative ( if any still could be ) to see about changing some of the WRONG information associated with any of the restraints..... i provided documentation to them about certain restraints & still they would not..... they simply stated that the items had been given to the CHP & all info would remain as IS -- PERIOD !!!! good luck !! joe

Interesting information, John. I don't know if this is the entire collection on display. I was told that there are several(?) boxes in storage. Joe, I know that you and Mark were there and tried to give them correct information. What I plan to do is send this link to the officer who was with me. Hopefully this Forum might help the higher powers to correct or at least obtain the correct information. It is a great display and when I noted the value of just four of the items (mitts, boot and ER's) alone were worth many thousands of dollars it came a a surprise.

Great Pictures. Thanks a million for posting them.

The ER handcuff is interesting because it is the only one that I have seen that has four links instead of three. And the ER leg iron is very rare. The only other one I know of is the one that Tom Gross owns and has shown in his book.

Thanks for posting these pictures.
It has been about 4 years since Joe T. and I went up there to see this collection.
There are some very unusual cuffs here, especially some of the extended German variations. I have never seen these before.
I always remembered that the collection was plagued with errors in its descriptions.
Most notably, the ER's are identified as "Russian" and the Takeda style leg irons are identified as "Strauss". I believe it is good to point this out and any other errors because someone might use this posting as a point of reference one day.
If anyone has noticed any other errors please identify them here.
Joe L., good call on the 4 link ER. I don't think I noticed that.
I can't identify the device in front of the shoe with the Oregon Boot. I think it is a padlock.

I see that on the Academy's Bean collar and cuffs combination, the cuffs have barrel keys, not the typical slot-style Bean key. The well-known original advertisment for this combination appears to show slot-style keys.

Yes Joe Fox, you are correct. Mark Lundblad has photos (somewhere) of the Lorey on the wall. He once also mentioned the Kruger to

me although now he only remembers the Lorey. He cannot find the photos or negatives yet. I've heard from two sources that there
is a fair amount more at he museum. Love to find out if it's true. Anyone in Law enforcement that may have an in?? It would be nice
to correct incorrect information, but now I'd love to know what rarities still exist in "the back room" or "basement".

The German Adjustable Darby Handcuffs, which we all know as Clejuso's appear in the 11th picture down.
The plaque states that they are made of Nickle.
It is apparent that they are manufactured out of steel and are mearly Nickle plated, but the wording upon the plaque is definitely improper.

Some links in the Rickard cuffs don't seem original. All images I have show elongated links as shown at either end. The 2 oval links may be a repair or a later replacement of one link to make the chain longer?
