Escape From the Dungeons of Chateau du Chillon!

In a first for any escape artist in the world, Steve Santini will travel to Switzerland in Feb of 2010 to attempt an escape from the dungeons of the infamous Chateau du Chillon, or, Castle Chillon. Chateau du Chillon is a Swiss national heritage site and the most visited historical monument in Switzerland. Dating to the Bronze Age, the first written records of the castle appear as far back as 1150 and the site has seen many additions and alterations throughout the centuries. Situated in an almost idyllic fairytale setting between Lake Geneva and The Swiss Alps, the castle is famous not only for its imposing gothic architecture but also for the fact that it was immortalized in the 1816 poem by Lord Byron titled, The Prisoner of Chillon, which detailed the imprisonment of the monk Francois De Bonivard who languished in chains in the dungeons of Castle Chillon from 1530 to 1536. In Feb of 2010, Steve Santini, (Offically named, The Worlds Most Extreme Escape Artist by the legendary Ripleys Believe it or Not!), will face the same fate when he is heavily manacled with 16th century wrist, leg, and neck irons, (Provided by the Swiss Henker Museum in Sissach, Switzerland), and is then shackled to an ancient restraint post in the castles dungeon. I will be spending two weeks over there performing some historical themed escapes for a Swiss/German television show.

I imagine I will run into some really interesting restraints but hopefully no laughing gas! LOL

Hopefully I will have the chance to take many pictures of interesting devices and if I see or get to try and escape from any really unusual cuffs/shackles, etc, I will post pics here of same after my trip.

That's a beautiful piece of architecture to be sure, though I wouldn't wish to languish there for 6 years.
Did the monk finally atone for his heretical transgressions?

As for the monk, I personally have my doubts he was imprisoned there for that long.

Something is telling me that Lord Byron may have stretched the truth a bit to make a good poem.

I say this with a keen understanding of the conditions of Medieval prisons and dungeons. Disease and vermin ran rampant, there was no sanitation to speak of, poor diet, (if any), and, were a person kept in iron shackles for any length of time the shackles would rub the flesh raw and deposit liberal amounts of rust to the open wounds.

What would follow would be a horrible death from infection.

While today we agree that many forms of Medieval execution were savage, cruel, and barbaric, being incarcerated for any length of time in an ancient prison or dungeon was often a far more horrible fate.

Escape From the Dungeons of Chateau du Chillon!

In a first for any escape artist in the world, Steve Santini will travel to Switzerland in Feb of 2010 to attempt an escape from the dungeons of the infamous Chateau du Chillon, or, Castle Chillon. Chateau du Chillon is a Swiss national heritage site and the most visited historical monument in Switzerland. Dating to the Bronze Age, the first written records of the castle appear as far back as 1150 and the site has seen many additions and alterations throughout the centuries. Situated in an almost idyllic fairytale setting between Lake Geneva and The Swiss Alps, the castle is famous not only for its imposing gothic architecture but also for the fact that it was immortalized in the 1816 poem by Lord Byron titled, The Prisoner of Chillon, which detailed the imprisonment of the monk Francois De Bonivard who languished in chains in the dungeons of Castle Chillon from 1530 to 1536. In Feb of 2010, Steve Santini, (Offically named, The Worlds Most Extreme Escape Artist by the legendary Ripleys Believe it or Not!), will face the same fate when he is heavily manacled with 16th century wrist, leg, and neck irons, (Provided by the Swiss Henker Museum in Sissach, Switzerland), and is then shackled to an ancient restraint post in the castles dungeon. In full view of the Swiss media and television cameras Santini will, using only a combination of contortion, pain control techniques, and the natural laws of science and physics attempt to free himself from his restraints and become the first person in history to escape from the fabled dungeon of Chateau du Chillon! Santinis escape attempt will mark the very first time any escape artist worldwide has taken on, and attempted to free themselves from, authentic Medieval restraints in full view of the media within the bowels of a famous castle that is now a famous national historic site.

I appreciate that.

This particular escape was presented as more of history/science experiment than an entertainment vehicle or staged act.

I wanted to see if it was possible for someone to escape authentic 15th and 16th century restraints using only objects a prisoner in those times would have had at hand, i.e. a wooden bowl and spoon for gruel, etc.

At one stage in the escape I actually picked open my leg shackles using the detatched shackle from the neck chain padlock which I had already picked with the handle of the wooden spoon.

It was a very interesting experiment for both myself and the onlookers.

Most intersting was a comment one observer made after it was all over when he told me he felt I was severely limiting myself as to the ordinary objects a Medieval dungeon prisoner would have had.

When I asked him what he meant, he smiled softly and commented that of course in the "good old days" there would likely have been the bones of past prisoners littered about and that I could have smashed and splintered those to craft makeshift tools as well.

A pity they had centuries ago cleaned the dungeon of such useful artifacts!
