The collars that are most often sold as "Slave Collars" on ebay have a built in screw lock that is worked by a bit/barrel key.

They were made by Froggatt and Hiatt although the ones in the catalog have also been passed off as "Slave Collars" from time to time even though they lock with a padlock.

In short, all were for aninals and not for humans.

Here are the handcuff pages. One item of interest is the chain cuff shown at the bottom left corner of the first page. This cuff was discussed on the forum last summer. No one seems to know if it was ever made. A second chain cuff on the bottom right of page 2 is also of interest.

I have examples of all the other restraints shown on these three pages, so I would speculate that these chain cuffs were indeed made and sold.

JOE :::: i have a feeling that the chain cuff on the 1st page is the WOODS CHAIN cuff...... could BEAN have maybe PURCHASED the patent ???? irreguardless of yes or no, i believe BEAN MADE or SOLD or BOTH - the WOOD CHAIN CUFF ....
as to the COLLARS -- IF santini is correct ( but he is not ) i wonder WHY NO HIATT or FROGGATT - LOCKING -- COLLAR is shown or sold in the catalog.... surely, they would sell a HIGH END collar to & for the wealthy..... UNTIL someone can show me PROOF that the HIATT & FROGGATT locking collars were indeed for four legged animals, i STILL accept them as SLAVE collars.... joe

The problem is the date. This catalog is from 1886 and the Wood chain handcuff was not patented until 1913. (#1056079)

For Hiatt and Froggatt items or products to be listed in a Lovell Arms catalog.

That is why it is called the Lovell Arms catalog and not the Hiatt catalog.

Last year there was a thread about the Bean/Wood cuffs. I spent many hours searching for a Bean patent or application for a patent. I could not find any listing for either. This leads me to guess that Bean did not file for a patent even thou the advertisement for his chain cuff states Patent Applied For.

I have this ad for the Bean Cuff--I think it appeared in an earlier thread but I don't remember where I got it. Anyway since it appears in the catalog, it must have existed and would be a great find someday.

Hello all,

Perhaps Bean included the chain variant in the catalog to see what intrest there was on the subject, as catalogs (of all type) are usually concocted, edited, and proofread long before they ever see the presses. This delay would have given Bean some time from the construction of the prototype (if there ever WAS one) to gauge wether to start cranking them out, or let them die on the drawing board?

I only propose this idea, due to the fact that even in this day & age, some items make their way into various catalogs, and due to low demand, are never manufactured.

I always ponder what the old invoice slips would have looked like from the long gone restraint companies. IE: how many of what items were shipped, where in the world, and to whom they were originally sold...

If anyone has a time-machine they would like to trade for a case of modern swing-thrus, Let me know...

I believe I got a good price on this catalog in spite of the fact that a post was made here with a ebay link.

I am wondering if whoever won that auction for the catalog is on this site and would like to share more details about the dog collars as this could shed more lite on the subject. More detail photo would be nice and see not only the collar but the sizes they were offering them in.
