I see that on Ebay they have a pair of Bean Cobb handcuffs. Now I know it states that this appears to be a different finish and they appear to be in real good shape. My question for you fine gentlemen is "ARE THEY REAL?" Not sure if I'm even interested in them or not....more curious than anything at this point. They almost look as if they have been blued like someone would do to an older shotgun. I'm curious to see what you guys think.

I don't know why a pair of Bean Cobbs would be worth faking.

The surface appears to have its share of tiny dings and wear marks, but the bluing covers them, and I don't see any evidence of holster wear. My off the cuff (no pun intended) guess is that someone had them blued or re-blued if they originally had a blue finish. The blued finish appears to be old.

A detailed examination might show something different.

First question that needs to be answered is if they really are blued or is it the lighting combined with the flash that gives the appearence that they are blued. Are there any known ones that are blued to date?

I seem to recall seeing an unfinished (non-plated) version for lower cost in some of the earlier catalogs, though I don't recall seeing any that were "blued".
My guess, for what it's worth, is that these were covered with firearms bluing where the plating was worn.

YTou're right, it could be natural patina masquerading as bluing under that lighting. It is impossible to tell much without having them in hand.

But there's texture, possibly tiny bits of rust, under the surface finish. To me that indicates age. The surface is in very uniform condition. That indicates to me that they were relatively undisturbed for a fair amount of time. Comparing these to a well kept but well used firearm, you tend to see "holster wear" on the gun. The bluing is worn off the corners, where friction has rubbed the steel bright. I'm not seeing that on these cuffs.

All in all, the cuffs appear to be in very good condition, though on my monitor I see dark spots where the nickel plating has worn off.
They may have been blued or may have just darkened with age.
I've used gun blue to cover unsightly abrasions and create a barrier against corrosion on my vintage firearms.
Once dry, you can apply gun oil to it just as with the original finish. It could probably be easily removed with kerosene or similar if desired.

My two cents. If you look at the bottom of the cuff where it lays on the table you can see a reflection of the pattern of the cloth it's resting on. Having the items at hand, I did a quick experiment with a blued gun and my nickeled Bean on a similar patterned fabric. As expected, the Bean reflected similarly to the photo, while the blued gun didn't. It looks like the color balance of the camera was set improperly.

Inoticed that. That's why I commented on gun bluing. They are an interesting piece. Sometimes you've just gotta hold them in your hands to make an accurate assessment.

They do have a blued finish. It appears to be original or if not, done long long ago.
