Can anyone tell me when smith and wesson switched the stamping from springfield to houlton?

I think it was about 9 years ago, though I don't recall the exact date.

IM not sure thats correct but i mite be wrong. i have a pair of pats pending and they are marked springfeild and i have a pair of m100s from the late 1980's and they are marked houlton. so im pretty sure it changed over sometime in the mid 1980's. correct me if im wrong. thanks

Hi abit:

I would date the pats pending single slot M-100 tentatively at 1981, though I thought that they switched to the Houlton stamp much more recently.
I'm not sure exactly when they switched over, though I'm certain that they were still using the Springfield address stamp in the late '80s.
Perhaps there was some overlap where they were using both locations and stamps.

While The Peerless Handcuff Co. uses sequential serial numbers, S&W does not.
We've also tried using the ampersands to obtain a date range, to no avail.

Thus far, we've been only able to identify with certainty whether the cuff is of first form or of second form.
I prefer the lower profile of the earlier form of the model 9x series of cuffs.

Not that I'm aware of, but you can submit an online inquiry form on their website.
They also need to know if your serial number is preceded by a number sign, as this would indicate that odometer has flipped, so to speak.

Ask why the dimple is there in the first place.

Duhhh. To engage the pawl ditch.

Well, the pawl ditch has been on Peerless cuffs since 1915.

But all those old Peerless cuffs had no dimple.

Until 1948.

And while S&W cuffs always had just one dimple, for a while, Peerless cuffs had two.

Why?

I'm not sure when they changed the stampings but S&W began making restraints in Houlton in 1979. That information comes from the S&W press release announcing that they'd made their 6 millionth pair of handcuffs.

I own a pair of 104s from either 03 or 04 that have the dimple detents and the Houlton stamping.
I'm wondering if the two coincided.

Perhaps Stan Willis or Dennis could shed some light here.
