They don't seem to be in the best condition, even though they were probably never nickel plated.

Actually these Mitts are in very nice condition compared to some of the others I have seen. The black finish is original. About half of the known pairs were Nickle Finish and the other half were Black Finish.

Over the last 10 years at least one pair of Mitts has come up for sale each year. Some on ebay and some through private sales. I know of 4 pair that changed hands in 2009, and I know of 2 other pair that I've been trying to buy for several years. One is in a collection and another is in private hands, but the person is not a collector.

Wow one a year is much more often than I anticipated! I can't lie I'm enteraining the idea of attempting to bid on this pair which I can guess will go somewhere between 4k and if it gets out hand up to 6k. However, it was suggested that I not look to spend alot of money on each pair I get infatuated with so as not to go broke.......my wife concurred lol. However it was Mitts that got me into this and how I would love to have another pair. So anyone have any advice? I could wait or I could keep hitting the real estate sales and flea markets just hoping to find a pair for pennies on the dollar which seems like a long shot but has gotten my collection started with some other cool cuffs.

Hi, Despite the rarity of this item isn't there a waist chain that is missing? And shouldn't that affect the price? Is it likely that the key is original to this set or just a workable item?

Well the key is not original it is an older replacement and there is no belly chain sold with the item. Both would certainly add value particularly the belly chain. This pair of mitts is certainly not the best set  out there....however to have a set at all is extremely rare in of itself. I know that Stan has a belly chain and key with his but I'm fairly certain he is one of very few to have all three (you can see pics of them at his website www.handcuffs.us.com).

in my opinion - the belly chain adds NO VALUE or very very little value... it just makes them more sellable... like remodeling a kitchen in a house.... costs you 10K but you get nothing for it... it just makes the house more sellable - lol ....... joe

Of the 37 Mitts that I can account for, only 10 have belly chains, and a few of those chains are not original. I think an original belly chain and original key would make the Mitts somewhat more desirable, but I don't think they add a lot of value to the price of the mitts. I think condition is more important.

not having LK post anything, i guess i must have been kinda right... that is ok - glad you or your friend did well on the mitts..... i am very surprised that a few people would pay that kind of $$$ for a $3K to $3.5K TOPS worth item, but yet no one will even make a REASONABLE offer on a super nice COMPLETE OREGON BOOT IN A DISPLAY CASE that had a REASONABLE asking price of $4.5K... go figure... each to their own i guess... still to the winner of the MITTS --- congrats !! joe
