Do Providence restraints have serial numbers?

recently I purchased a pair of Providence Tool Company leg irons. Both cuffs are stamped with "142" on the hinge, opposite to the company markings. Is this a serial number?

Hi,

I have had many of these over the years and the only numbering I have ever seen on them were owner stampings.

While nothing is impossible, it is likely the numbers were not stamped by the factory as a sort of serial numbering system.

I agree with Steve. I think your numbers are user applied. I have seen many different Providence Tool cuffs and nothing that looked like a serial number.

Indeed this brings up an interesting question. What were the earliest handcuffs issued with manufacturer's applied serial numbers? I may be missing the obvious, but did anyone do this prior to Peerless?

Dear Günter,

You may be taking an unacceptably high risk by questioning Providence. I thought I should caution you about tempting fate in this way.

All Kellogg restraints have cereal numbers, and all Dali restraints have surreal numbers. These may prove more fruitful and certainly safer avenues of enquiry.

I must admit that it was not easy for me – as someone whose mother language is not English – to get all of Jack's puns. Nevertheless it was a quite amusing answer for me, one of the three Jack-Tanis-Fanclub members .

Last but not least, thank you Steve and Joe, for the serious serial number answers. As many Providence restraints were used during the American Civil War, I guess it is not impossible that the number on my leg irons refers to a certain company, platoon or something similar military.

Cobb handcuffs pre-date peerless and have serial numbers at the hinge. Each cuff is 10 digits off of the other.
