On British darby cuffs they always have those weird crow foot like stampings in a circle on the cap one the end opposite the key hole.
The cheap modern imitations have the same but just plain punch marks.
Why are they there.
Do American made Providence cuffs (and ER) have punch marks on the end caps? All the pics just show the cuffs laying flat; never the ends of the lock tube.
Although I don't own an Elias Rickard cuff, just a padlock, I don't believe the cuffs have punch marks around the end cap. The Providence Tool Co. cuffs do not either. Nearly all darbies have them to seal in the cap, others have pins from the side or both. The type of punch mark seems to vary from worker to worker.
One of our experts can probably tell how the caps stay in otherwise. My guess is by either piening the tube over the cap or brazing or forcing it in while the tube is hot and shrinking on it.

The crow's foot as you call it is like seal mark, and the end caps are plugs. What they do is fit a plug into the hole and peen it over, grind it and then stamp it.

On older models of British darbies they also pinned the plug in place with pins that went into it's edges.
