Yes, I mainly collect old knives, have for many years. Along the way I have picked up some interesting old cuffs. I am just now going through them to identify what I have.

I stumbled upon this forum and it has been a big help so far. I would like to thank everyone who has helped me identify my old cuffs thus far.

I also collect old padlocks, does anyone know a good forum out there for locks? I have a few that I cannot identify. I know, another addiction!

Hi Jim:

I have eclectic collecting interests, but have also collected vintage and antique knives for decades. I've been using a product that I'm sure you've heard of called Metal-Glo to polish up the tarnished old blades, and a few years back I tried using some on my tarnished antique cuffs with excellent results. The experts tell me that this decreases the value of my cuffs, but since I don't collect as an investment, I polish many of them anyway.

Quite a few of the cuff collectors (myself included) also collect old padlocks.
My padlock obsession began in my childhood, about the same time as my handcuff/shackle obsession.
One of my uncles passed away when I was in my early teens. My aunt, aware of my obsession with locks and keys, was kind enough to give me, amongst other things, 2 shoeboxes of old padlocks and keys that he had acquired before I was born. They go well with my antique mechanical vending and amusement machines that I also collect.

I know that there are a plethora of sites dedicated to padlocks, some dedicated to picking techniques, others by brand, etc. Many of us have a special interest in all brass padlocks, railroad locks and storybook locks. I don't frequent any of the padlock forums, but I'm sure that the locksmiths here could direct you to the best sites.

I have used Metal-Glo on knives and other things. I don`t go crazy buffing knives or anything else as it does decrease the value. I don`t buy things to resell, but I do want to protect my investment and the historical value of an object.

I started collecting padlocks at 10 years old, my grandfather had a small convenience store and he passed away when I was 10, there was a ILCO padlock in the original packaging that never sold in the store, I ended up with it and still have it to this day. It reminds me of my grandfather every time I see it.

As far as the Adams cuffs, they won`t be listed anytime soon on fleabay!

Back in the day, I spent about one weekend a month hunting through flea market isles, antique shows, sidewalk sales and the like. Cutlery dealers occupied something like one in five tables, and there were plenty of bric-a-brac tables with a good sprinkling of the vintage padlocks. Finding collectable cuffs, however, was more of a challenge, though I noticed that most of the shoppers were searching for antique pewter and ornate metal-ware, and had little if any interest in handcuffs. Come Sunday afternoon, dealers were often willing to accept far less than the optimistic price tag they had affixed to their cuffs.

One of my favorite ploys was to bargain hunt on an overcast day, make an inventory of all the items I was interested in, then wait for the first drops to fall.

It worked like a charm...
