Recent Auctions

We have had quite a variety of very interesting stuff these last two weeks. A Gill "flash action" style cuff, a Rankin and a pair of Pratts top the US list. In the UK a Hiatt belt with backstrap Darby cuffs attached had a 1917 date. On the Germany eBay a folding Bulgarian cuff and a bottom pull key Russian cuff sold. From France we had a nice chain cuff.

On the Rankin cuffs shown above, which sold recently with key.

I have seen this key also on Providence Tool co. cuffs.

Does anyone know if both cuffs take the same key?

NO, the RANKIN & PROV TOOL cuffs take DIFFERENT key sizes & thread pitches.... so i do not know HOW or if the key with the RANKIN cuffs really open the cuffs as it should..... maybe somehow, they worked the key to just catch a thread or 2 & then pull back on the key to get the bolt back..... i know that you can take an ALLUM - HIATT - key & file down the INSIDE threads a little bit so that the key will fit over & onto the POST and CAREFULLY & i do mean CAREFULLY screw the key onto the bolt a quarter turn -- then back the key off slightly & then do it again, but go another quarter turn - back the key off - then go again & on & on.... this will SELF thread the key WITHOUT hurting the threads on the BOLT.... after a couple of full turns, back the key ALL OF THE WAY out & off... tap key on something & blow out the tiny bits of the ALLUM inside the key.... now start over again, but be careful & make sure the key threads straight on & go - go - go...... repeat the above key cleaning as needed..... i have never tried going the whole way as i did not want to take a chance of BREAKING the bolt off.... i would just make sure that i went a couple of full turns & then open the cuff by just pulling back on the key....... joe

As I mentioned in a old thread, my Rankins opened with a Hiatt Leg-iron key.

Yes, I politely told the seller that the key was wrong, because they were also selling a pair of Providence cuffs without the key. It seemed a pity to separate the key from the correct cuffs. Since there were already lots of bids it would have been hard to rectify the problem. I was politely told that I was wrong even though they admit to know nothing about handcuffs.

I HAVE RECENTLY RECIEVED A PAIR OF HAND CUFFS THAT BELONGED TO MY GRANDFATHER,
WAS ACHERRY STREET BRIDGE OPERATOR FROM 1941 TO 1965.THE MANUFACTURER STAMP HAS AMERICAN HANDCUFF STAMPED ON ONE OF THE CUFFS.I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE WORTH.

DAN: did you mean HIATT -- HANDCUFF KEY ????? i don't think that there is no way that the LEG IRON key would fit into the RANKIN keyway unless you really really ground down the key... even then, the INSIDE dia would be to big & no way would it catch the bolt.... did you do something special to the key like soft solder the INSIDE of the key ???? take care... joe

American handcuffs have been selling on eBay in the $20 to $60 range. I think they're great cuffs, but they made a lot of them.
