Maybe Someone Here Can Identify This Lock?

Have not had any luck identifying this old padlock. Maybe someone here can identify it.

It measures 5 1/4" high x 4 1/4" wide, it has a number 8 stamped on the shackle.

It is rare, it is German, and it dates to the 15th or 16th century.

my take on the lock is that to bad it is NOT older then the 18th century at its OLDEST... yes, more then likely GERMAN, but could be RUSSIAN or most any other OLD country is it is one of the crudest locks of the TYPE that i have seen... i have had SEVERAL ++ of this EXACT type of padlock as well as many many other locks of this general type.... have had them in BRONZE/BRASS as well..... i suppose could have even been made in any of the ASIAN counries as well in the 1800's ON as the craftsmen ship of the lock is not that good, but photos can be deceiving... it looks more TINNIE then iron .... hope this helps..... joe

Steve & Joe,

Thanks for the reply. Do either of you know what the 3 holes on the edges are for?

Also, the lock weighs almost 2 pounds, it is iron. I have a key that if you jiggle it a little it will open it, but it is not the correct key for the lock.

So it could be from as early as the 15th century? I did not think it was that old.

Any other information anyone can give is appreciated.

15th or 16th century.

The scroll holes on the edges are just for ornamentation.

I am currently in Europe and have seen a few like it in museums over here that deal with Medieval subjects.

If you plan to sell it and list it on ebay, you will quickly see how sought after it is by padlock collectors that also know exactly what it is and how rare it is.

I appreciate all the information about the lock.

I don`t think I will be selling anytime soon! It will be the center piece of my growing lock collection. Now if I can find a key that fits it properly.

Atlanta,

There is a piece missing from the inside of my lock. It is the key guide that would be in the center of the key hole. This was pointed out to me by a lock collector with a keen eye.

The key will need to have a hollow core to match the original key. The key that came with this lock is solid brass. It works if you work at it a while. It will open, but I do not want to damage it.

I will check the bay to see if I can find something that will work. I don`t think I can ever repair the part that is missing. I will just leave it as is for now.

Same type of padlock was found in the south Sweden many years back. The lock has the same shape but a diffrent keyhole. Padlock is not made of thin but the type of steele you had in those days. The padlock is mentioned in a letter to the Swedish "livrust kammaren", the gouverns over the collection belogining to the swedish crown, the padlock puzzels the experts but they claim its made before 1700 possible in the year of 1500. It also have a strange marking in the schackel with the symbolof a lion. Same marking is found on the barrel of a gun so the experts think that the swedish padlock was made by a gun smith. Its possible but the shape a type is common in Germany, holes on the sides is for decoration, many smiths traveld to sweden and started out their business and brought with the traditions of styles like locks and guns. Some of these padlocks has a rather complicated mechanism and ned a key with a barrel to further increase the security.
I think its a very nice padlock and it did need a lot of skill to fabricate but as with other thing copies could have been made.
