Hudsons

Just received the 'Bulgarian' folding cuffs, which were almost certainly made by Hudsons in the mid 1920's
Hudsons actually manufacturered over 10,000 of these many were sold to August Schwarz who subsequently 'copied' them. So my question is where are all the rest? I know that Michael Busch has one set in his collection does any other collector know of any others. I believe the set that has just arrived has the original key it also came in a small black canvas bag, I will be contacting Hudsons to find out if they have any more information on them (apparantly they do have a couple of unissued sets in their store room but they have not located then even after 5 years!).
Hopefully Joe will be able to attach 3 photos of them.

I have quite a similar handcuff from Rumania - the seller sold several pieces of this model some years ago.

Thanks Joe for posting photos. Also thanks to Gunter for posting his photo. I do have the Romanium folding cuffs (identical to your photo see P.391 of Alex's book).
The problem here is that they although they are quite nicely made they have a flat key and a curtain within the lockcase. The 1923 catalogue photo clearly shows a pipe type key. We know that Hudson produced handcuffs for several companies including Dowler and Hiatt but never marked any of their cuffs.
I would be interested to see a better quality photo of the cuffs that Michael has and ask whether his has any markings on it. The Romanium cuffs I have are marked 05.91 or possibly 05.97
Th Hudson cuffs have a very small marking which is ?sTc 4. The quality is also far superior to the Romanium cuffs. What markings do your set have?

Hi Chris,

here are some pictures of my cuff:






As it seems the lockcases and the wider stationary bows are made of brass, the swinging bows and narrower stationary bows consist of steel. Is your cuff completely made of steel?

Congretulations! Well done :-) I saw them on eBay but did not recognize them as Hudsons.
I thought they were Rumanian instead of Bulgarian.

Perhaps Alex Nichols can help you out on the questions you have on Hudsons; I know he
did some research in the past...

Very interesting Michael and thanks for the photos, the set I have, have steel bows and steel lock-cases - perhaps there are two models? or may be your set is not Hudsons and are copies made in the 1990's!!
Only joking both of our sets are clearly different to the August Schawz and Romanium folding cuffs, the give away seems to be the thickness of one side of the lock-case. It would make sense that brass is far more workable than steel to bend for the hinges but is probably 5 times the cost. So my theory is that the first models Hudsons made had the brass lock-cases then with better machinery they changed to steel? Do you have an original key?

Hi Chris,

in fact my cuffs came with a Peerless-style barrel key, I have no idea what the original key looks like. Are the springs on your cuff strong? On my cuff they are rather weak. I will tell the producer in Pakistan to use better springs next time

hi Michael

on the back side you have 2 small screws

spray them firts with oil

and take them out

then you will be able to take the locks out

carefull

if you took the lock appart you can bend the springs a little

all what you do with fingerspitsengefüll so carefull what you do

do not under big presure / force

if you have do this put all parts on the right place

press the lock into the body and replace the screws

now your cuff is fixed

I did the same thing with the schwarz / hudson cuff

one thing I know now is that the scharz cuff is original schwarz

and a good copy of the hudson
