Insane ? No, rare items such as this don't turn up at car boot sales, so you have to dig deep if you want them.

"Insane and Greedy"!!?? - Well, this is specifically why I am remaining anonymous. Too many people judging me. Thanks for the defense Anonymous #2. Or is that #3 as I am actually Anonymous #1. So #2 is "Judgmental and Jealous" and #2 is more like me. Haha.. Who's on first?

Anyway, I bought these because they are awesome!

Lars Holst lists these cuffs on his "Top 10 List" his "Number 2" favorite with number 1 as the, let's say, big brother to these.

The seller can thank him as after reading this on his website I couldn't resist.

By the way, the Ferrari I want does cost about $150,000 in the pre-owned market. I can't afford it though so I had to settle for the Muehlenfelds. And the cost of the Muehlenfelds was probably even less than the most minor repair to a Ferrari so I am actually saving money. Now I am really happy with no buyer's remorse whatsoever.

Hi all,

First of all I want to congratulate the winner of the Dortmunder!

I just think I have to make a post as my collection and Top 10 list is mentioned in the previous posting.

There are several ways of building up a restraint collection and it's not up to me to tell what is right or
wrong as we all have different desires. Collections are also built up from different economical abilities, special
topics and special interests.

As a long time collector (started in late 70's), my preoccupation has changed over time. I discovered eBay in 2002,
much later than many of my fellow collectors. Many rare cuffs were sold for decent prices while I stayed asleep.

At that time the selection was far much better than it is now. There were Romers, Palmer, Phelps and other rare cuffs
listed and sold for "high prices". Compared to the prices of today, most of them sold really cheap. When was the last time
you saw a nice Romer listed on eBay? It's not only a matter of price but the selecetion.

In 2008 I bought my both Mühlenfeld cuffs from the same U.S. seller on eBay. The prices were high but compared to todays
prices they turn out to be a bargain. Ok, what am I trying to say? Dont be afraid to pay top dollars for quality stuff!
Many people think you are overpaying but over time its a true investment. Sometimes you get a little ahead of the market
but so what? This is not the stock market.

There will always be collectors willing to pay very well for rare high quality pieces. I prefer to buy only a few, but truly
rare and expensive cuffs, a year. Some of you might think Im wrong but thats my way of collecting.

I agree with Lars completely!
If you want to add to your collection, you have to pay the price! I know that I have been blasted a few times on this forum for bidding too much on some very rare items and the comments did not make feel good. I had second thoughts on ever "going for the gold" again, but I relied on my gut instinct and was able to sell or trade various items later on in time for more money or for items that I have not owned before.
At the time, I was making some good money and was able to afford it easily by going out on whatever calls I had to to earn it. In some regards, I am glad I invested in handcuffs as opposed to the stock market. As we know, the market tanked and is finally showing signs of recovery. Cuffs, on the other hand, has stayed fairly constant with some items suffering perhaps a 20 to 25% drop in value over the last 2 years or so. Many of my investments dropped by 50%.
It is my belief that now is the time to acquire some top end restraints. While I think this is the most a Muhlenfeld has ever cost, I think the winner will get to enjoy it for a while and will eventually trade it or sell if for a nice profit in the future. There are just not that many chances to find or win one of them.
My 2 cents............

I've never seen a "real" collector (whatever the hell that is) take someone to task for bidding more than they would pay for an item. Many will say, "You could have got it cheaper," but a collector knows how much something is worth to THEM.

Don't let the sour grapes people ruin it for you.

Remember that there was at least one other bidder just under your high bid. So more than one person was willing to pay a high price for the item.

I agree that in the end, if you are happy with the purchase then that is all that matters.
Being somewhat sensitive in nature and always striving to be esteemed within this community, I know I care a little too much what the "other" collectors think and say about me and my collection.
Your message speaks the truth and I should try to focus on the positive thoughts from the many worldwide friends that I have traded with or met in person. What they have to offer in handcuffs and the words they speak are really what is important.
