Hello.

I have the chance to bid for one set of tower´s double lock leg irons.

They look fine and come with two keys.

The problem is that one of the keys work properly but the other is jammed in one of the locks and can neither open the shackle nor be removed from the keyhole.

I doubt if I should bid for them because I don´t know if this can be mended somehow and the key extracted.

Have you ever had such a problem with this type of leg irons ?

Do you think is possible to repair ?

How much would be wise to pay for them in such circumstances ?

Thank you very much indeed for your counsel.

Best regards.

The Tower cuffs are very difficult to repair. Since they are so common you would be wise to simply bid on a working pair.

The keys are thin metal and will break if the key is forced and since the lock cases are heavier than the handcuffs, they are much harder to open for repair. I have tried to pry those lock cases and they don't open. It's a big gamble and even a bigger one if you don't know the lock works inside and the history of problems with these locks.

Take a punch and drift out the key post from the back.

Any broken key parts should be able to be shook loose and manuveured out through the keyhole minus the post with a small bit of bent wire.

Reinsert the post and peen the back of it flush.

If your problem with Towers cuffs and leg irons is merely broken key bits, there is no need to take off the entire face plate.

I have removed the key posts on many of these, fished out the broken key bits, replaced the post, and the cuffs work like new.

I kind of agree with everyone else here.

My experience in the past has been that if the key is jammed in, then all you can do is break it off and dig out the pieces left behind, which may or may not work.

But worst of all, my experience has been that if one key jams in them then every key thereafter will also jam in them. It usually means there is something defective in the cuff lockworks themselves.

You can knock the post out and return it with only a modicum of evidence that it has been done, but that makes no difference in the workability of the cuff afterwards.

Ian McColl and I discussed this some time back and his opinion, after working on untold numbers of them, was to just send them on and look for another set.

I see that as very good advice, so a corollary to that would be: "don't buy them in the first place". As Joe said, there are plenty.

My 2 cents.

Thank you very much indeed for your advise.

I am a modest not very experienced collector and I think it will be wiser to wait for another chance.

The main problem with some types of cuffs or leg irons is that they are more likely found in auctions in the USA. But most sellers are not willing to sell to Europe probably due to law restrictions. So I get most of my new adquisitions from auctions in the UK, which reduces the possibilities quite a lot.

Thank you very much.

Best regards.

Hi I agree that the Tower's are worth toying with if you know there is anything wrong the mechanism. They are old and most have been used extensivley and the small inner parts are prone to waer after years of use. Repair by removal of the face cap is really out of the question due to how the cuff was assembled. If it is just a poorly made key stuck in the keyhole, then knock the drill pin ( key post) out as Santini suggests.

Keep looking for a better pair, theyb are out there but I see your concern with not being in the home land of Tower's.

Frank,

I also understand your difficulty in obtaining items. There is federal law here in the states against exporting restraints to anywhere in the world except US and Canada without a special license.

This based upon, I guess, some notion that if an American sells handcuffs or leg irons to anyone except Americans and Canadians then they will be used to torture children in some place we never heard of. Even if they are 100 year old collectors items. Such is the thinking of the world these days. It is good that Europeans and Chinese can sell all they want and no children will be tortured.

We can, of course, buy all we want from anyone.

All that said, I see many eBay dealers who aren't aware, or don't really care, who will happily send cuffs to the highest bidder wherever they are. I've never heard of a collector being arrested or prosecuted for selling handcuffs or leg irons, but who knows when the government might suddenly get interested in it's own rules...

Good luck,
Brad

Hello,
it is not possible to biy all from europe, it is forbidden to export leg irons out of european union. Handcuffs are O.K., but no combinations. if total max. length is under a certain limit. Some big handcuffs can make problems, e.g. Chubb detainer.

Best regards

This has been discussed before but it has to do with the Governments bowing to Amnesty International and there claims.

Hello again.

Thanks again for your contributions.

The auction ended yesterday and I finally decided not to risk and I didn´t bid for the irons. Congratulations and very good luck for the winner.

About the restrictions to buy or sell handcuffs or other restraints, I consider them a real nuissance, but I suppose they are needed in some cases.

In Spain is not completely legal the possesion of restraints. Handcuff collecting would be regarded as a really weird activity and I don´t think there are many collectors.

I am completely sure neither my relatives nor my friends would understand my interest in handcuffs, so I keep my collecting in a very clandestine way, which dislikes me very much due to the fact that I am a honest and responsible member of my community.

But things are as they are.

Best regards.

For me, that's easy. All my friends know I'm weird!
