New Hagge Model K and Model L handcuffs

Hi everyone,

the Heinrich Hagge company of Bad Segeberg, Germany, has two new handcuff models on the market.

The Model K (K for "klein", meaning small in German) is a hinged handcuff with smaller interior cuff diameters, reminding of the AHC Juvenile cuff. The lockcases are stamped "Deutsche Polizei" "H. H." for Heinrich Hagge and the month/year of production. Please see pictures below:

The model L (L for the German word "lang", long in English) is a handcuff with a seperator bar. Here some pictures:

The Hagge people now also make a large key for their cuffs, here one is shown close to a pair of regular keys:

The sale of Hagge products is restricted to police and corrections departments in Germany, so I am happy that I was able to obtain at least a very few of these items.

Interesting new product. Having checked the prices, I'm amazed they cost between $200 and $250 US. For a cuff that is basically unchanged since the 1940s. What correctional facility or police department does not do price checks nowadays? I believe they're mostly used in correctional settings.

That they can't be bought by the general public (hard to get) makes them somewhat more interesting, I guess. I'm not sure there's anything else to justify that kind of price. The double lock feature is nice.

Security issues with the key might be the main concern for the company. I don't see why else a company would willingly exclude private buyers from their products. On they other hand, why should they care? Imagine Dunkin Donuts selling only to cops ... a business model that probably would not work.

Hello,

I recently had the opportunity to compare and test my K & L and standard C version.

The K (=small) version my have its (small) market for detainees with standard to smaller wrists if necessary. Usage is intended to police and corrections departments, less for usage during regular police work.

The L version (a lightweight!) seems to be a collectors item.
Due to the distance between both hands, its easy to free oneself having the key. Testing this on the regular C version its much harder and takes much more time. So its less security, not more.
The only advantage might be the handles use by officers to have more control on detainees. This feature is provided already with speedcuffs etc at lower costs.

I wont think this small advantage on model L justifies the price which is more than twice. Will correctional facilities really buy this modell L?
Im really eager to see the first pic on TV using the L during trial etc.

Police offers comments on model K & L: Who needs such cuffs? What are these cuffs made for?

BTW: Where can Hagge / Lips handcuffs be seen in regular usage beside Germany, Netherlands, Belgium(?) ?

Patrick and I have seen the bi-coloured K model with Lips markings as a prototype about 7 months ago. Back then we were told this cuff was more or less "top secret"; the prototype was tested in two or three youth prisons in Holland. Lips intended to get a new contract with the Dutch government by introducing this new model.

Funny things are going on at the moment; the Dutch government wants not only a new contract (the current contract with Lips was signed in 1978!) but also an up-to-date type of handcuffs: hinged, black/blue coated, lightweight, doublelock levers, etc. Two months ago all offers have been turned down, so we are back to zero right now. In the mean time www.nordhandel.de exposes both models K and L on their website, however they are obviously not offered on the official website of the Hagge company.

The standard Hagge/Lips model C handcuffs are in use in Germany, Holland, Belgium, UK (small numbers) and Australia (marked 'Chubb').

I enjoyed our visit half a year ago. Can you believe it has been that long already?

Hi,
I've picked up on this conversation through a Google search. I have a couple of pairs of the AHC juvenile cuffs and would like to add an example of the HH model K to my collection. Can anyone advise me on where I can obtain these cuffs, please?

Photorestraint, i do not have, nor know where to obtain these cuffs. I have checked all of the dealers I know of and no one seems to carry them. I cant help you there. You said you have "a couple of pairs" of the juvenile American Handcuff Company Cuffs. If you would be willing to part with a set, i would possibly be a buyer, if the price is right. Thanks for your prompt feedback about the HH cuffs. Perhaps someone else on the Forum may be able to help us with a source for these cuffs.
Regarding the AHC juvenile cuffs, I'm sorry but I'm not interested in selling a pair at the moment. If that situation changes, I'll get in touch.

Hey James, Nice to finally meet you! Thank you for the Ebay purchases. If the cuff is a double to one in my collection, I list them for sale. Trying to cut down on space used for the collection. LOL! Every cuff helps!
