Lily Cuff Images

Again, many of you may have seen these images before, but for those who have not, they are great images.

When captured they were kept on board 2 iron clad war ships at Washington Navy Yard and kept in "rigid manacles and ankle chains with heavy steel balls"
You might be able to see the ball behind the right foot of Payne in the long white coat.

The photos are amazingly clear. Chilling.

It is somewhat surprising that they had so many of the (otherwise rare) Lilly cuffs at hand.

Hi,
I notice that the top bow in several pictures shows the lily iron cut straight across (raised part just past the lock tube).
Most Lily irons I've seen are cut into 1/2 of a hexagon, or in other words the corners are cut. I remember someone telling me the
difference but can't remember what it is. Anyone else know? Was it angled cut Lily's are marked with Roman Numerals and others
are marked with regular numbers? John

Both of my Lilly's are angle cut. One has Roman numerals and the other has regular numbers.

I have one angle cut and one straight cut, one is std and one is small. Both have Roman numerals. I'm thinking there may be no pattern here. At least nothing we would understand. Maybe different blacksmiths.

I'm pretty sure that the Lilly irons worn by the Lincoln conspirators ended up in the private collection of the late assassination authority Dr. John Lattimer but what ever became of the ball and chains that they were forced to wear before their trial? Does any one out there know?
