Gardner Shackle/Oregon Boot Patent

Howdy,

Ok perhaps this is the lazy way of doing this...but can someone tell me the patent number for the Gardner Shackle PAT'D May 16 '76. I'm not sure if I'm having a "dumb" day or what but I'm having a heck of a time finding it.

The Gardner patent #54889 was issued on May 22,1866 to J. C. Gardner, of Portland, OR.

Well I thought this was me being ridiculously dumb today. What I'm looking for is the patent print off of the Leinenger Oregon Boot. So I was searching for Oregon Boot with the patent date of May 16 '76 which of course was difficult to find using the "Gardner Shackle" as the search name...since the patent dates do not match let alone the name. Why I thought they would use the same patent..I have no idea..feel free to laugh LOL. So thank you Ron for giving me the date of the Gardener Shackle for it will save me a full day before realizing what I was doing wrong. On a second request do you by chance know the patent number of the Leinenger Oregon Boot. I have no clue what he may have called it on the patent. I do know that there were two different keyings done on the boot but will assume that they used only one patent.

The Leininger patent #177406 was issued May 16, 1876 as an "improvement in shackles"

I must ask though. If you go to Lars website @ www.holstcollection.com and check out his top 10 (top 11) he has #10 as the Oregon Boot. When placing a description of the boot he states that "The Oregon Boot was patented in May 16, 1876 by the Oregon State Penitentiary Warden, J.C. Gardner." According to the patents that would be incorrect?? If his is stamped PAT'D May 16 '76 he has a Leinenger version of the Oregon Boot as opposed to the "Gardner Shackle" version.? Take a look and see what you think.

The text was written a long time ago and I may be incorrect. Maybe I have mixed up some
details. I would more than gladly be corrected. The stamping on my boot, May 16 '76 is
correct but I actually never checked the patent number.

Mine has the same marked date as yours and is the Leinenger version which does match up quite well with the patent and appears that yours is the same. Thankfully Ron is an encyclopedia of patent numbers so I could further establish the makings and documentation of this piece.

"The Master" just knows where to look. Anyone interested should have a copy of Normans "Modern Handcuff Secrets for Magicians" and Don Stewart's "Collectors Guide Handcuffs & Restraints"

The back section of Stewart's book a large listing of patents with picture, date and patent numbers. Forget the prices for cuffs they were never close to reality. I spent many weeks in several patent libraries, getting the patent information for Don. This was before it was "easy" with Google and other sites it was all just on film and hardcopy. So much for the good old days.

I know what you mean Ron, I spent my spring break as a teenager in the search room of the patent office going through the stacks searching and copying. Somewhere I still have a few brass tokens of the USPTO that one used on the copy machines. I even got a look at the restricted patents on jail cells as the guys there were impressed with a teenager that showed interest in patents.
